Vertical lines on screen on startup

Turned on my Macbook Pro 17" 8,3 the other night and the screen looked like this.

I called Apple, and the tech had me do a couple of commands which fixed the issue. But I'm trying to figure out that happened. Is it the graphics card? The HD?

I'm running the latest version of El Capitan.
