AppleTV 4 keeps waking up

I put the device to sleep either by press and hold the Home button or going to Settings and selecting sleep. It sleeps for a minute or so but then it wakes up on its own and turns the TV on as well. Curiously enough it only happens to one of my TV's (Sony Bravia bought 2009) but not with the other (Samsung Plasma TV bought 2013). Any ideas?

Thank You,
Erasmo.

I Think I figured out the problem. It seems to happen when I put the AppleTV to sleep while a video playing app (I tried with HBO go & Plex). It'd appear the video player app stays active and wakes up the AppleTV (which turns on the TV). I tried quitting the Apps before putting it to sleep and the problem did not reouccur. Can someone from Apple please look into this?

I'm still having the problem as well. For a while I thought it might have something to do with my connecting the ATV to my receiver which then goes to the TV. So today I tried connecting the ATV directly to my TV. Exact same problem.

When I turn the system off with my Harmony Remote or switch to a different device (such as Roku), the ATV light goes dark for a few seconds, then comes back on. Someone had suggested it might be the Harmony Remote that was causing the problem, but the ATV comes on several seconds after the Harmony Remote finishes sending commands. And just to test that further, I've tried covering the Harmony Remote immediately after the ATV light goes dark so that even if it is still sending something, the ATV won't receive it. Same problem.

So unless the Harmony Remote is sending some unknown command such as Turn Off, Wait Five Seconds Then Com Back On, I don't see how it can be anything the Harmony Remote is doing. I wouldn't mind so much except on several occasions the ATV "watched" a few shows on its own accord after I turned it off.

@taffywall ... thanks! that's great to know.

The real issue for me is that this has just started to happen _after_ an apparent OS update to correct this behavior.

Before these ghost wakeups, I used to just shut my AV rig down with my remote and walk away. Now we're coming downstairs in the morning, and the screen is glowing. A little too Poltergeist for me.

Yes I finally found others who are having this problem. No harmony remote here. My Apple TV will randomly just turn on and start playing or if i am just sitting at the menu screen idle it will start playing. It is usually netflix. It is playing in the background. It is definitely an issue with the Apple TV. It drives me nuts... Still no word from Apple yet on this issue?

Yes if I force quit all apps so there is nothing running it does not happen ever.

I have switched the Sleep After time to 15 minutes but I was watching Plex earlier and literally just hit the menu button to go backto the main screen because I had to make a phone call. 5 minutes later it started playing and sound coming through the speakers even while the app was running in the background. You cant even make the Apple TV do that... When you switch an app the app stops playing right away. Why does it keep playing in the background. All this is related... it seems to me....

One possibility that hasn't been mentioned is that ATV will respond to HDMI-CEC commands fro the TV. Could the TV or TV remote be sending a Play command?

Also, when you want to leave an app, do you hit Pause first, or do you actually leave it playing in the background? Since tvOS is more closely based on iOS, continuing to play might be expected behavior, since that's how iOS works with music apps e.g.

No TV remote in the picture.. in fact our TV remote doesnt even have batteries... we dont need it since the Apple TV will turn our TV on and off...

As for playing in the background. I cant even make Plex or Netflix play in the background as it is. If I am watching a show on plex and switch the application it stops playing. Same for netflix. I didnt think I could play plex, netflix and all these other things in the background as it is so if they start up while they are in the background and I am at the menu screen there is obviously a problem.

BTW I cant thank you enough for your help everyone. I just cant figure this one out!

I agree that, when you switch applications, the one you were in appears to stop playing. But, if you don't explictly pause it, it may be in a state where it is still trying to play. Remember that tvOS is very similar to iOS now, so apps are independent programs and can run in the background. I had a similar problem with a Sony Google TV, where the YouTube app would wake up and start playing the last video it had played; I had to force quit it every time to stop this. Waking from sleep is harder to explain, of course.
