Dictation messed up in El Capitan

When I use dictation in EC, i get parts of my dictation duplicated and repeated MANY times. Seems to happen when I use the commands: "New Paragraph" and "New Line" Has anyone else seen this? I use dictation a lot due to rheumatoid arthritis, so I really hope this gets fixed.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

It is very unfortunate that this problem has still not been addressed. As others have said, I have had some improvement on the "duplication" issue when I use enhanced dictation. But, I use dictation a lot, and I have found the enhanced dictation to be significantly less responsive. If I want to quickly dictate a couple sentences in an email it is much faster to use the non-enhanced, internet connected dictation. Assuming, of course, I don't have to delete the duplicate text.

So, this has been an issue for two years now. Any chance Apple might address it?

This fix does not work. I read this a few months ago, enabled local dictation on my MBP, and the text duplication still happens. Currently running Sierra (not yet High Sierra) and still happening (saw it today).

IMHO, it's more a function of time; longer sentences = more duplication. When I dictate shorter sentences and press FN to complete the text entry (and let the speech recognition engine breathe) it happens less. Maybe that's what's really happening when it appears to correlate to "new paragraph" and "new line": Those are often statements said after a lot of text is dictated.

Same problem with me. Dictation worked fine with Yosemite, but since upgrading to El Capitan it now it just repeats endless lines when telling it to do a 'New Paragraph' and also when stopping it. It is as though it has stored the text up in its cache memory and is dumping it onto the screen before closing down. This happens in Mail and in Notes but not (so far) in Open Office Text Documents. Does anyone know of a cure for this problem (which renders Siri dictation useless in these apps)?.

I have also just noticed that the problem of repeated lines, which happens on both my wife's MB and my MBP, only seems to occur when I am not using enhanced dictation - i.e. my voice is being converted to text via the internet connection with Apple. It does not occur if I use enhanced dictation, i.e. when I dictate offline using the downloaded English dictation file. Very odd and irritating.

Having just spent another long session with Apple support on the phone I've discovered that the answer is go into system preferences, click on dictation and speech, then click on enhanced dictation which means it doesn't go online through the Internet . As far as I can see the only disadvantage is that if you want to use the mixed languages it won't work, but for me that's all I need.

The Apple support bloke reckoned it was possibly due to my Internet connection, who knows!

Yes, I have also found that using the dictation works OK if it is offline. The downside that I have noticed is that the 'enhanced' (i.e. offline) dictation is much less accurate than the online version. I have got used to using online dictation in Mail but without saying 'paragraph' or 'new line' - just switch off the dictation momentarily (press Fn key once), hit return key, turn on dictation (press Fn key twice). Rather clunky but it works and I am getting used to this now.

This never happened in Yosemite and is a dictation bug all three MacBooks in my household (all running El Capitan).

This is good now it is working. This is going to make a big difference because I really use this a lot thank you Bill.

Same problem here!

I tried downloading the enhanced dictation package.

So far, it seems to be working with regards to duplicate lines. However, it seems the responsiveness of the enhanced VR is somewhat diminished over the standard version. For example, some lines of dictation completely fail transcription.

Perhaps the VR will adapt as it gets used, similar to stand-alone commercial products.

Thanks for the solution!

This is still not working and I am surprised that Apple hasn't noticed this posting!

Just to show them the problem, as I'm dictating this, I'm going to say "new line" after the final question…

How do we get them to see that there is an issue to fix?

How do we get them to see that there is an issue to fix?

See what happens, Apple developers?

Apple leadership and developers are neither reviewing, or participating in the Apple Support Community. And we are not Apple employees.

You can directly communicate with OS X developers via your more clearly defined feedback.

I say “more clearly defined,” because your post does not define a specific problem. I can dictate your sentences, state “question mark,” at the end of a sentence, and either ”return,” or ”newline,” and it works for me.
