New Apple TV Download

Today I got the new Apple TV with Siri remote. I was told by the store manager there's two versions a 32gb and 64gb and both I could download movies from my iTunes purchases to watch offline.

great ideal for when I go aboard to hotels where a portal loging is required to access the wifi which the apple TV don't give a pop up option to sign into such networks.

SO because I can download movies to shows I've purchased previously and be able to watch them offline I made a purchase for the 64gb

now I'm about to throw the thing out the window so if you would like to save this Apple TV from destruction please tell me if I was mis informed or how to use this feature

thank you

Apple TV 4 is extensible with new apps created by independent developers, that don't just have to provide audio or video playback. It is possible that some third party apps provide a facility for local storage. Apple TV 3 is limited to the channels that Apple has created with the cooperation of third party content providers. There is almost no impetus for further development on that front.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner. There's zero point in the larger hard drive if I can't download movies. I have pretty bad internet at the moment, so it's frustrating that I can't download things. This is the exact reason I cut times with Amazon video. @Apple, please fix this ASAP.

And to use AirPlay, they have to be connected to the same WiFi network (not useful when traveling), and occupies both devices. So I can't travel with just two devices and work on one while streaming videos to the other. How stupid is that? What's the point of AirPlay if it takes up both devices? Just make it possible to download videos to the Apple TV and there's no use case for AirPlay at all.

Apple TV is a streaming device and marketed as such. Peer to peer AirPlay will work when the devices aren't on the same network, if using basic AirPlay then once the stream has loaded on ATV the other device should be free. The only model that was capable of storing media was the 1st gen which was confusing for most users and had a much larger HD/cost.

The Apple TV isn't marketed. I don't think I've ever seen a commercial for it. I bought it because it's the easiest way to connect my iTunes purchases to a TV. I doubt there are even 32 GB worth of Apps you could download to it, so please tell me why anybody would buy a 64 GB version? The assumption is that your purchased media will occupy most of that. Apple Store employees told multiple other people in this thread that it would download purchased media.

I tried AirPlay before posting that. I just tried again, letting the TV episode start playing. I watched it for a few seconds, and then switched to a different app. It stopped the video and displayed the other app. Let it play while I typed this, several minutes into the episode it behaves the same way. If it's possible, please explain what I'm doing wrong.

I have the 64Gb model, I bought the larger model to have room for more apps. tvOS apparently takes up 7.27Gb, 11% of the memory on my system, 22% on a 32Gb model. i'm also showing 20.67Gb of app usage so far, so it clearly isn't that hard to start using up the space. The Apple TV plays your purchased media, as long as it can stream it from the iTunes Store, your computer, or another device. It does not offer offline storage for your media. iOS devices provide limited support for background operations, streaming video isn't among them.
