I know this is an older thread, but I have been dealing with this problem recently.

I was working from a Photos library from my MBP that I transferred to my iMac (late 2012 2.7 GHz) and getting the com.apple.photomodel memory crash as well.

I've tried reinstalling High Sierra several times and repairing the Photos library, but the issue still persists.

Next step will be to try and manage though Power Photos, but wish this would be something Apple could address given its push to improve the Photos App.

For me, this problem began when I began to use the HEAL tool. PowerPhotos could not process the image corrections, and Photomodel began to launch. It is difficult to go back and search which pictures have been 'healed' but I now just force quit Photomodel every time it launches, and do my healing work in GIMP. Sad to have to go out of the Apple Environment, but we do what we must to get our work done. Apple needs to look at this.

Hello. I had the same problem. No solution provided on apple discussion helped me. For me, log out from iCloud and then log in to iCloud again worked. I did following:

1. Turning off iCloud sync with photos

2. Log out from iCloud

3. Log in to iCloud back

4. Turning on iCloud sync with photos.

Then sync was running several hours (around 10hrs) for 12GB photos.

Hope, that helps.

Hi gg90eve,

Do you have iCloud Photo Library turned on? It sounds like your computer is trying to upload all of your images to iCloud. Depending on the size of your Photos library, this process could take a considerable amount of time and resources. The articles below explain how the iCloud Photo Library works. It's always a good idea to back up your computer before making significant changes to it.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250

Get help with your iCloud Photo Library
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204570

How do I turn off iCloud Photo Library on just one device?

To turn off iCloud Photo Library for a single Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Options next to Photos, then deselect iCloud Photo Library.

If you have Optimize Storage turned on, you might not have all of your original photos and videos on your device. To download the original photos and videos on your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and select Download and Keep Originals. On your Mac, open Photos, choose Photos > Preferences, then select Download Originals to this Mac. Then you can turn iCloud Photo Library off. You can also select the photos and videos that you want to download from iCloud.com.

Take care,

The first thing to try is to backup your Mac and to update to the most recent version of El Capitan - MacOS X10.11.2, if you have not already done so. That fixed a few bugs in the Photos.app.

Photos needs to do a lot of background processing when you first open a library, and it is trying to get all the memory it can get. Have you tried to let Photos run over night with the problematic second library open, so the photos model can finish its tasks, while you do not need the mac for other things?

If letting Photo run over night unmolested does not get the mac back to normal, check the Console app, if you are seeing repeated error messages, related to Photos. If you are seeing something suspicious post it here.

Sometimes one single photo or video in your library, that cannot be processed an be holding up the background processing.

Check your problematic library for photos or videos in an unusual format. Create a smart album with the rule "Photo is unable to upload to iCloud Photo Library". This album will show all items in your library that are having an unsupported format. Remove these items from your library by exporting the original files to a folder on your Desktop and then deleting these items from the library.

If all items are supported, but Photos is still hanging, try to repair the library: See this Help page: https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht6be18f93

HI I tried all that but still the same problem com.apple.photomodel suddenly eats up the memory my library is 14GB and just worked fine last week.. I added a couple of photos and now I can only run it for a couple of min before the com.apple.photomodel eats up memory and all freezes

running latest photo & el capitano software

let it run over night... did not finish'

made sure I turned off iCloud sharing ( was never turned on to beginn with)

rebuild library with repair

I do have multiple photo libraries and had that problem with another one before my solution at that time was to split it so each part was under 10GB and that worked.. will attempt to do this with this one too.

but there must be something else that can be done

Help please....

What about:

Sometimes one single photo or video in your library, that cannot be processed an be holding up the background processing.

Check your problematic library for photos or videos in an unusual format.

Could there be any photo or video in your library, that cannot be processed? This can happen, if you are using third-party camera applications on the iPhone. that are saving the photos in high resolution TIFF format, or graphics application with special graphics format.

Jan 13, 2016 9:38 PM in response to léonie

thank you leonie.. this was most likely the problem

I could not figure out how to find the damaged image inside the library as the photo application and the com.apple.photomodel only allowed me to work in the library for 2 min before com apple.photomodel did eat up the memory and the system froze. and the smart album approach did not bring up anything.

I used power photos to create a new library and copied the photos from the damage library to the new library this worked as power photo does not open photos to do that job. When I copied I did get error msg that files could not be copied because of their format and the new photo library works without problems.

I wish apple would do a timeout if a photo or video can not be processed and let the user decide to abort the action. this now has happen with several photo libraries I have when they are getting in the 10gb size range ... very annoying and time-consuming

That would be useful indeed. Or an option to start Photos while deferring the generation of Previews or faces thumbnails, like it is possible in Aperture.

Hello,

Had the same issue. "com.apple.photomodel"using up to 52GB of RAM.

You have to rename "com.apple.photomodel" in

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PhotoLibraryPrivate.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/PhotoLibraryServices.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com.apple.photomodel .xpc/Contents/MacOS/com.apple.photomodel

To example "00com.apple.photomodel00"

! You can not rename this file when using the OS, so you have to boot on an external OSX and then go to the drive of your main OSX an rename the file.

Or connect your mac to an other mac using Target Disk mode and then you can rename the file...

I had no issues after doing the above...

Good luck

Can you still see your complete Photos Library in other applications?

Great, if it is working for you. But please be more careful, when posting advice, that will result in a modification of system files. Explain in more detail what the fix will do, because the posts here might be found by any search and out of context. Renaming the com.apple.photomodel daemon will result in preventing it from being launched completely. So it cannot prepare the Photos library for sharing any longer. And you may not be able to access your Photos Library from other applications, because the XPC services will be broken. Modifying system file should only be a last ditch resort. And never ever been recommended, without including the advice to make a backup backup and without excluding all other possible reasons for a problem.

Hello,

Yes I still see the complete library in other App's.

For me It was the last solution.... I had tried an archive and install but no solution... Tried a clean install, and migrated my data from a Time Machine backup but the problem still occurred...

So for me the only solution was the above I posted. No issues found at this point.... I know this might not be the perfect solution but it is still a solution 😉
