ATV4 homesharing 1080p buffering/file-loading issues

ATV4 1080p stops playing every 2 .5 minutes showing (buffering).using home sharing

ATV3 hooked up to the same gigabit hub does not stop and has no problems on the same connection

ATV4 when playing apple downloaded movie " inside out" 1080p
(home sharing) stops playing after 2.5min with the swirling buffer symbol, does not continue with movie after that (on its own)

resetting/ re-booting the ATV4 makes no difference.

ATV3 same movie, same connection, has no problems

Question, since this is not a hardware issue, is it an issue between ATV4 and iTunes 12.3.1.23 64 bit ?

not sure if this should be addressed to iTunes or TV4.

Regards

Apple TV (4th generation), tvOS

I have the same issue. I have reverted to my ATV 3 for now. I cannot watch my iTunes 1080p downloaded movies, through Home Share, on the new ATV 4 without buffering every few minutes. I have PC and Mac based iTunes Home Share servers on a gig network. When I put my ATV 3 back into my system, all is well. While swapping between the ATV 3 and ATV 4, I noticed that video quality through the older ATV 3 is much better than through the newer ATV 4 even though they are both set for 1080p, which is a bummer. Meta data from my movies and TV shows from non-iTunes sources, is not displayed correctly as well. I get the impression that the new ATV 4 was optimized for streaming from the internet and not as a player for home based video libraries, which is another bummer. Over all I am disappointed in the new Apple TV 4.

"Found" my problem. Long story short I ended up pushing my iTunes "server" and Apple TV to the 2.4 GHz band on my Airport Extreme. I'm a little miffed that despite showing full signal strength on the 5 GHz band, the throughput was stifled to the point that I couldn't stream 1080p video.

I think that showing 4-5 "bars" or signal strength on WiFi is a complete misrepresentation of the actual capability at that frequency.

Hope this helps someone!

Same problem here

mac-mini, iTunes with home sharing

Same movie, Same Wifi Network with AppleTV 3 works ok. Problem with AppleTV 4

Sometime , the whole movie will load and then it is ok, but most the time, no buffer is loaded and playback keep stopping to buffer a little bit before starting playing again. Those time, the buffer never increase.

really annoying

Hi,

I have the same issue. New ATV4 (ethernet connection) buffering frequently with homesharing movies from iMac in 1080 but if I stream the same movie from 'purchased' movies option (I assume iCloud), there is no buffering. It is definitely not a connection speed issue. Streaming from netflix works fine. I bought the the ATV4 to replace a ATV2 that was still working fine over the same set-up.... so am very disappointed 😟

I hope that Apple sorts this issue ASAP otherwise I have wasted my money

Same issue here. Running an ATV4 wired to a Netgear gigabit hub and a Mac Mini running iTunes, each with cables less than a metre long.

Have noticed it pauses about 3 or 4 times to buffer on movies. In my case it does it for both movies purchased through iTunes and content i have imported into iTunes from Handbrake or whatever. As others have said, these all played fine when my ATV3 was in the picture, just the 4th Gen seems to be messing things up.

To Clarify, I am posting pics of what is still happening.

1) Inside out HD -ATV4 completely stops receiving new vid data after about 2.5 minutes (see pics)

a) same Apple file, Inside out HD plays fine with ATV3 and buffer bar progresses nicely on the same gigabit hard wired buffered 100/1000 switch connection

2) Minions HD plays fine on both

average max Network transfer speed from itunes server to network hub ATV4 is connected to (windows 10 readout throughput av. 40Mgs per sec) . More than enough bandwidth.

This is so irritating Apple need to sort this quickly.

Like many on here I have spent thousands on Apple products (ATV4, AirPort Extreme, 4 IPads countless iPhones) plus all the money spent on ITunes content also into the thousands of pounds, and home sharing which should be straight forward does not work properly.

Yet people who use something like PLEX to share media have no problems, if more people move to other sharing software like PLEX this would not be good for Apple as PLEX is not compatible with the Protected DRM content from ITunes.

PLEX users can rip DVDs and BLUERAY at much cheaper prices than ITunes store and some PLEX users may be using content from less legal avenues such as file sharing sites. How can a non functioning Home Sharing service on AT4 and IPad/iPhone benefit anyone?

I have contacted Apple again.

This time instead of contacting Apple about the problem on the hardware side (ATV4 AirPort Extreme ) and going through a support phone call I contacted them via email about the problem in relation to one of the movies that does not work I AM LEGEND with Will Smith.

The email reply was brilliant in terms of customer service, Apple have offered to refund the cost of the movie, however it still does not address the wider issue that is affecting lots of iTunes content so I am still having problems with home sharing.

I included a link to this thread in my original email to Apple support, I hope they can address this matter but if you are having a problem with home sharing please email Apple support about the movie in question so they can appreciate the scale of the problem and link to this thread.

Same here, replaced my ATV3 with ATV4 and it stops playing randomly ! I use iMAC to play iTunes movies / audio / pictures

Sometimes completely stops (or my patience halted after 5min waiting)

Have also an ATV3 in other room at the end of my WiFi range and it plays perfectly (same movie same resolution playback)!

Come on Apple

Hope it is not HW problem or we will have to return the thing

I have the same issue with my new Apple TV 4 as well what a pain. I have large movie and TV show collection I serve via homeshare from a old Mac Pro I use as server. Worked great with my old APTV 2-3 but sure not this thing. I am not gonna always do the online store play of purchased movies I want to do via home share -- a big use on my part of apple tv, other stuff nice addition but this makes the new 4 not great for my purposes. Hope they fix it soon I have filed a note with apple on the link to file problems with as have many others on this forum and other forums -- all seem to have this issue, rare is the person who does not.
