Nike Running with Heart Rate and GPS

The first time I used my iWatch with Nike Running app it recorded my heart rate and my GPS locations. That hasn't worked on a run since. I understand that the Nike Running app gets my heart rate data from the Apple Health app but not sure what I did on that first run that made it all work. Now I can do a run and sometimes get heart rate, sometimes get GPS and sometimes neither.

Does anyone know the trick to make it all work all the time?

I have all the data sharing options turned on in the apps and in the Privacy settings.

Hi

The Nike+ Running app does not presently offer support for accessing the heart rate sensor on Apple Watch. To monitor heart rate via that app, you can instead link any Bluetooth 4.0 Smart heart rate transmitter to the app.

Apple Watch does not have a built-in GPS feature. Your route can instead be recorded using the built-in GPS / Location Services feature on your iPhone.

Thanks Jonathon. As you can see from my images and previous post the Running app is able to collect data from other apps such as the Apple Health and the GPS in the iPhone.

So while it doesn't directly access the heart rate from the iWatch the heart rate from iWatch is accessed by Apple Health on iPhone and Nike Running app accesses Apple Health. I also appreciate that the GPS data is actually coming from my iPhone. Perhaps I should have reworded my original post to make this clearer.

I have had this working and provided evidence of this (see the first image).

My question is related to settings and possible sequence of events to ensure it works every time.

I think you may have to force the iWatch to take regular reads while you are doing your run. I'll try this tomorrow by starting a Run Activity on the iWatch before I start the Run activity in Nike Running on the iPhone.

I looked at HR reads (in Health app) during the period I was running with Nike Running and there is only one. If the iWatch Run Activity is activated it takes several reads a minute during the activity (this is what it did on the 29th when my heart rate was added to the Running data).

Well for those following this progress a win and a lose today. My theory on the heart rate was true. If your sharing is all set up as above just start a run activity on your iWatch to collect the heart rate data which will be stored in Apple Health then start your run on Nike Running. Here's the image showing my heart rate (in red) against my run. As you can see the bad news is it didn't collect my GPS data on the Nike web site but you can see from the second image that the Running app does have a that data.

Pottsy66, THANK YOU!!! I have been scouring the internet looking for information on this. The first time I used Nike+ with my apple watch I noticed the same thing, HR data were included with my running. I was thrilled! But for the last two months I've been trying to recapture the exact steps that lead to that, and I've failed. I too reasoned that you have to get Apple Watch taking moment to moment HR by launching a run on Activity app, and then launch Nike+, but this has not worked for me. Do you launch Nike+ using your Apple Watch or iPhone? I think I'll try this today -- I'll launch run on Activity, then Nike+ on my phone (I usually launch on my watch) and I'll see how it goes. I'll report back. I assumed that the Nike+ update killed this functionality, but hopefully I'm wrong. I don't know why they wound't be shouting about this feature from the rooftops!

Success! 🙂😁 I used this order of operations:

1) start activity on Apple Watch (outdoor run, but I don't think that matters)

2) start Nike+ ON MY PHONE

3) end run on Nike+

4) end Apple Watch Activity run

Nike+ stats now include GPS and heart rate. This is super helpful for me, because I run in a very hilly area and I can clearly see my HR shoots up when I'm on hills... helps me moderate my run a bit -- I tend not to give myself enough slack on hills and it really kills the joy.

Also, this spurred my memory of how I accidentally happened upon this functionality in the first place. I was attempting to calibrate my shiny new Apple Watch so I could run without my phone, so I started and Activity run on my watch. But, I wanted to continue collecting data the old way for comparison, so I started Nike+ on my phone, not my watch.

I have no idea why my Nike + Heartrate works sometimes and doesn't others. I have used about every app available for the watch and Nike + seems to work the best. Run keeper watch app heart rate monitor on watch works great but doesn't really integrate back into the iPhone very well. Not sure why but am going to research. The Runkeeper watch app is the fastest watch app. Anyway! In regards to Nike +, it seems to be grabbing the heart rate from another source that is accessing the apple health heart rate function. I got a heart rate from the Nike + app while run keeper was working in the background. Also got a heart rate with ismooth run working in the background. I'm thinking they both activate the apple fitness app that records heart rate. Anyway, going to use the steps you posted above from now on! Thanks for posting them...

Hi!

I had almost the same issue. GPS was never a issue for me but the heart-rate didn't show on my running data.

A friend of mine was using the exact same constellation I did and he never had an issue - heart-rate was always there.

So I started to check all the settings and found that they have been exactly like it was as my friend had set it up - so my conclusion was that there's something else in the background which is blocking the synchronization of the data.

So my simple approach was to remove the Nike+ app from my iPhone. On this process I was asked if I also want to delete the Health-Data which I denied.

After the app was deleted I simply re-installed it from the AppStore and started it. After the login to Nike+ within the app I was asked to give the app several permissions (e.g. access to Music, permission to send notification) - and after that I was asked if I want to catch heart rates :-)

Guess what - the app worked afterwards like a charm and all the date including my heart-rates where showing up in the activities details after my first run since re-installation :-)

Maybe the issue is that there should be an Apple Watch already be connected to the phone when you install the Nike+ App so that the app knows about this connection...

Hope this info helps...

Has anyone had luck figuring out how to get it to work so you can leave your phone behind with BT 4.0 HRM to watch and data visible in Nike+ RC (or any other apple watch series 2 app). I still cant get it working to send HR data from phone to watch, but ultimately i dont want to run with my phone. Thats the whole reason i bought series 2. Its been nothing but frustrating so far.
