Installed Snow Leopard and Toshiba Canvio External hard drive March 3013 in my 2007 iMac. Three days ago - Nov. 2, 2015 the icon for the External Hard Disk disappeared from my desk top. No idea why. Checked utility disc-nothing. Can't use Time Machine. Don't know how to locate the disk. Checked wires-all secure. Any advice would be appreciated - everyone needs backup. Thanks

Have you rebooted to see if it appears after a reboot?
You not only need a backup, but a backup of a backup. What happens when the main hard drive fails?

Was the Toshiba drive formatted for use with a Mac?
Is the Toshiba drive's USB cable detachable? If yes, you could try a different USB cable.
Can you see the hard drive in Disk Utility?
Eric- I cannot see the hard drive in Disk Utility.
Kahjot- yes the Toshiba drive was formatted with the Mac. Been working since March 2013. New cables..OK? Good idea. Thanks
It's an easy thing to try, at least, and should be cheap if you have to buy a cable. It's good to have known good spares around. Sometimes cables go bad.
