App Store, "An error has occurred", "The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1012.)"

I am encountering a strange issue with two Mac laptops while a third one does not have the issue. Essentially, when I start iTunes, it complains a newer version is available and that I should download it. When I accept, it launches the App Store (as it should). However, this step fails. When I select the "updates" tab, I get a dialog box "An error has occurred", with the message below:

The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1012.)

What does this mean ? How can I get to run updates on those computers again ?

Thanks!

I'm close to suggesting that you do a clean reinstallation, but first, is there an external drive you can start up from with OS X installed? The other Mac running in target disk mode would do. The question is whether you get the same error when booted from another drive. If not, something is wrong with the internal drive, such as bad sectors.

To boot from the internal drive of the other Mac, start the latter in target disk mode and connect it. Then start the affected Mac and hold down the option key at the chime. Don't transfer any files between the drives.

I tried to boot from another drive, but it did not bring anything new: I probably did not fully understand the procedure, but my understanding was that the infected laptop was essentially running the OS of the non infected one it seems (a bit like when working using a connection to a remote computer), so launching the AppStore was kind of pointless (it would just allow to check the working one was working).

As yesterday was the only day in a long while where I could find time for a clean sheet install, I did go with that, even though I really wish I knew exactly what the problem was before I do that (yes, re-installing is an hassle, but not knowing what the problem was and fearing it may come back is worse for me). Also, to me, this story has a strange taste of Windows 95 that I had to reinstall every once in a while to prevent it from falling apart (which eventually caused me to switch to UNIX based systems only) :-(

Thanks a lot for your advice and help trying to investigate this issue.
