ATV 4 won't play my movies that play on ATV 3

I'm having more problems with this new ATV!!

Getting a message, "This content cannot be played because its format is not compatible with the Apple TV" when trying to play movies from the home library.

They played just fine with the previous model. ***.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

No I don't agree it's a valid file, a point you clearly understand even if you are going to pretend not to, I suspected it wasn't and apparently Apple confirm this. I'm bemused at why you continue to defend this software, why would you even want to carry on using software written by people who don't adhere to standards. Poorly formatted media files are a real security risk, perhaps not in your limited circumstances, but would you be happy accepting a file that doesn't conform to standards from someone else.

It means it conforms to standards sufficiently for Apple, because every other piece of Apple software, and every other device accepts it as valid. At least until now. But if you look at the specs between the 3 and IV, it seems the issue likely with the last line, where they've significantly reduced their support for MPEG-4 encoding.

  • H.264 video up to 1080p, 60 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.2 or lower
  • H.264 Baseline Profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

I know I'm a bit late to this thread, but Mr. Churchill, do you mean to tell me that a movie I downloaded legally using the authorization code included with my physical Blu-ray copy was somehow ripped using inferior software? Are you really telling me that Universal Pictures doesn't use "quality software"? Are you also telling me that Apple themselves is also using inferior software? I couldn't watch even the titles I downloaded from them. I got the same "This content cannot be played because its format is not compatible with Apple TV." message.

Readers may notice I'm referring to the problem I had, the same one as what was described by the other posters, in the past tense. I figured out what MY problem was. This isn't to say this is the answer for everyone here. Mr. Churchill, while you "wasted" your time with the guys in this thread, you failed to suggest the possibility that there might be another issue. For me it turned out to be network related.

I had my ATV4 plugged into a HomePlug powerline adapter. Due to the layout of my house, and spotty Wi-Fi coverage, I've previously depended on these in some rooms. In this case, the ATV4 was not getting the bandwidth it needed in order to play the files I had on my Mac mini in the other room. Instead of Apple writing code into tvOS to lead the user in this direction for troubleshooting, it apparently takes the "one message for all problems" approach.

I'm calling you out on this Mr. Churchill, because you have a "Level 10" status. I'm not suggesting that at Level 10 you should have all the answers, but I am suggesting that at that level, you should have a better attitude towards those of lower levels.
