6s lock screen issue.

Helping my mother-in-law troubleshoot her new 6s. On the lock screen, there is a white box around the number 3 on the unlock keypad and she cannot type in anything to unlock the phone. We have tried doing a hard reboot several times and the box remains in the same place. Any thought on where to go other than the Apple store, which is a pretty long commute?
