itunes program not responding

My Itunes program is not responding. Any ideas what I need to do to fix the problem?

I am also having a problem with iTunes not responding. It opens up fine, but after importing one CD, it freezes and I have to go to Task Manager and "End Task" to get it to close. Then I have to reboot the computer to get it to open and allow me to import another CD. I didn't have this problem when I had the previous version. Also, I cannot open Internet Explorer or Outlook Express without rebooting once the freezing of iTunes has happened.

Anyway, whilst waiting I´ve tried this:

Nope, didn´t solve the problem.

okay, you checked on the best article to try with a persistent itunes.exe (and no NIS 2005 on the PC).

we'd better check to see if you're getting some kind of conflict with a Windows startup item. does itunes launch after a selective startup using MSCONFIG? for the technique, see the following document:

Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows

I followed the advice in Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows. Unfortunelately this wasn´t the right way either. This is of course an annoyance. Especially as I´ve bought a iPod Nano to my son for christmas. So switching back to iTunes 6.5 isn´t an option unfortunelately.
But, it is even more intriguing as I can´t remove itunes.exe from the task manager. I asked thr system to remove the process, wen´t to have diner and came back 45 min later. It was still there.
Now, I´m in no way an expert on computers. But I´ve never seen a process so stubborn.

So, any more ideas on this? I´m short of them right now.

Thanks for the time you´´ve spent with this problem so far btw. Much appreciated.

yeah, that's a curious one. it's usually associated with security software suppressing the process ... but the most common culprit in those cases is NIS 2005, which you don't have.

it's typically produced by the firewall rather than antivirus components of a software suite. are you running the F-Secure firewall, or just the antivirus? if you're just running the antivirus, what firewall are you running?

Sure is an interesting problem. Wow, my last post was misspelled. Don´t try to type in just the light of your monitor kids.

Anyway, I run only F-secure AV. No firewall except the one implemented in windows, and the hardware in my router.
I do have the same problem even if I start the comp with a "clean" startup as previously suggested.
Now, this problem with iTunes not starting just happened one day. The one change I can remember doing previous to this problem was installing the Royal theme for XP. Now, of course removing/changing the theme didn´t solve my problem either.

okay, let's try making sure the itunes and ituneshelper processes are enabled in your SP2 firewall:

How to enable iTunes in the Windows XP Firewall

... if no joy with that, by way of experiment, is it possible to connect directly to the internet rather than via the router? if so, do you get a launch if the firewall on the router is out of the loop?

Nov 22, 2006 11:53 AM in response to b noir

Nope, no such luck. Both iTunes.exe and iTuneshelper.exe are allowed to communicate with the router. Success yet to be accomplished.

Now that was an interesting idea. I did connect my comp directly to the cable modem just to try it out, but no. Still the same. I´ve also started my computer without any network connections at all. But still just a very persistent itunes.exe that refuses to go away.
I also ran a few registry scans/cleans to make sure that isn´t the cause to this. But you know the answer, nothing happened 🙂

Any further ideas?

we're definitely in experimental/theoretical territory now. but if you're game we can still work through some possibilities.

let's return to your F-Secure. back in the itunes 5.0.x and 6.0.x we could sometimes trace reports of recalcitrant itunes "skipping" while playing music to F-Secure doing realtime scanning of the itunes music files and library files.

i haven't seen that associated with a launch failure before, but it seems something worth checking on.

what security levels do you have your scans set to? does lowering the security level help?

is it possible to exclude the My Music folder (and the locations on the drive where your music is stored, if they are different) from F-Secure scans?
