  1. What is in the current library when you open iTunes? If it all works then merging with the content recovered from the device shouldn't present a problem. We can talk deduplicating methods later. If the library is essentially empty or broken then you may want to close iTunes, rename the iTunes folder in your Music folder as something like iTunes Corrupt then restart iTunes to get a new empty library into which to put the content.
  2. The program won't actually take a judgment on the content of your device. If this is your previously digitized collection of media then as long as you haven't sold on the originals there isn't an issue.

the current library is approx. 16,000 songs ( the ipod is 16,567 ) which are 2 years of just tossing them on to the ext HD alphabetically, so those 2-3000 songs are not clearly defined , album etc and the library is about 560 songs short ? how, I do not even know ...but The I-Pod is fine ! so I think i'd like to call the library "broken"... start fresh with the setup as it displays on my I-pod ...basically albums !

now, if I go into files , I have 4 iTunes assoc files; I tunes media, I tunes extras, I tunes genius ( that's me I guess ) and I tunes library

the last " I tunes library " when I clik on goes to iTunes ...if I rename that...

does the working end of the library, empty?

am I reading your last comment correctly ...😕.

Read Make a split library portable.

You can shift-start iTunes to create a new library. If the current library is in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes then if you move or rename the iTunes folder then start iTunes it will create a new empty library for you automatically. If the library is on some other path iTunes will complain the library is missing and prompt you to choose or create one. Renaming the folder is the easiest non-destructive way to start afresh, knowing you can go back, or import anything that you later discover is missing. Clean up later once you are happy. This assumes there is room on the drive for the two copies. If not use the shift-start method to make your new library at a suitable path.

ok ...I know... a bit slow on the uptake, but do need to get it correct ... and still trying to get used to the view that windows 10 gives

it's all a lot more then I've ever done

when opening the file I tunes , I get the 5 folders ;

album artwork, I tunes media, I tunes library extras, I tunes library genius , and finally I tunes library

the file which opens this is, as you described ....

C:\Users\ me, the genius 😝 \Music\iTunes

I do not re-name this one ... or do I ?

I am thinking " I tunes library " is the 1 you want me to re-name ...?

this will have the effect you described ?

then my library will be empty and i'll have the clean slate on which to draw my ( our ) new masterpiece ?

geek squad did put the entire backup, into a separate folder, so I still have it all on the computer already, incomplete as it is, it's there

i'm contemplating a close proximity to completion Sensei

iTunes Library.itl is a file. An iTunes library lives in a folder, the .itl file, supporting .itdb files, the Album Artwork folder and the iTunes Media folder. I'm suggesting that you rename the containing folder and let iTunes make a new one.

With iTunes closed use Windows Explorer (sorry, File Explorer) to open C:\Users\<You, the genius 😉>\Music, select the folder iTunes, press F2 on the keyboard and edit the name of the folder. Launch iTunes.

a choice w / the touchcopy program allows you to "find songs" which are on the ipod, but not in the iTunes library ....communicating w/ their helpdesk they were hesitant to claim the program would / could copy all the songs at 1 attempt .... tho suggested multiple efforts would eventually get it done...

that sounds like a potential problem and loss of music along the way, to my untrained eye and minimally experienced tech skills ...

when I 1st open my music, i get the "backup" file(folder) and the "I-tunes" folder...

as it should be

the backup shows 72 GB when I check properties ... I tunes however , shows only 843 MB ?!?

I have to be missing something ...😕

opening the I tunes folder, then checking " I tunes library " shows only 4 MB

geez ....

probably a good thing I don't have an I phone !!!😝

iTunes doesn't automatically scan the iTunes Media folder each time it starts. The size of the media listed in the application doesn't have to agree with the size of the media folder, particularly if the media has yet to be added.

It is some time since I used TouchCopy (I think I had TouchCopy '09) but I'd be surprised if you can't simply set it to recover all of the media that it lists as being present on the device.

If you're going to work with an empty library then surely you won't need to use the "find songs that are not in the library" option?

Each track in iTunes gets a unique ID. When you sync a device iTunes compares the list of IDs on the device with the list in the library and the selection that is supposed to be synced to the device. These IDs are also used to sync ratings, play counts and playlists. A playlist is an ordered list of these IDs. I imagine that TouchCopy's "find songs that are not in the library" feature makes use of such IDs in a similar fashion.

My two scripts start by attempting to use the same feature, but normally media recovered from the device into a fresh library will be given new IDs. The scripts will make a second pass when it cannot find matching IDs that attempts to match on track properties such as name, artist, album, track no. etc.

oh boy ... keeps getting better

so, renamed the iTunes folder ...however, 342 songs remained in the library...

there are definitely a few albums that were I tunes store purchases ...and maybe more then a few,

but then there are single songs and sporadic groupings I can not make heads or tails of how / why they would be there ...

so few, relatively speaking, is simply deleting them the easiest step to take ? or does this indicate a potential problem further down the road

"view" does not give me that option,?!?

nor do any of the other choices from the menu bar ... or when switching between artist, song, album etc

we are talking about when I am in I tunes ..correct ?

went to the "file explorer" as well ..

but ctrl+B does nothing but beep in that window ...o k then did find "view" and

I can "hide" the folder I tunes , which is the purchased stuff ...does that accomplish the task ?

I went back and forth thru all variations of I tunes ... there is no hide I cloud purchases in my version

Which version of iTunes is installed? The control to hide cloud downloads has moved around. If memory serves it used to be Edit > Preferences > Store, then untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

Don't hide things in Windows/File Explorer. That won't help.

12.3.0.44

installed by geek squad 2 weeks ago when I bought the computer ...

pref does not offer any mention of the "cloud" ... nor does anything come up when I go to my acct in I tunes store .....

as this group of songs are purchases , I can always get back to them, if I understood it correctly...

is there an issue of I just left them when doing the touchcopy transfer...other then being duplicated ?

how do i determine the version of i tunes, on my older classic (120gb) without connecting to the computer or i tunes ?
