My brand new iMac "Late 2015" is SO SLOW. Why?

I purchased an iMac 2.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD back in June 2015 (a "late 2013" version it turned out). I just got a spinning wheel all the time. Apple was nice to talk to me twice, had me wipe the HD and reinstall a clean El Capitan to no avail. Then, they agreed it was unusually slow and gave me a brand new "late 2015" iMac.

Well, this new "late 2015" iMac doesn't seem to be much better. Everything is a class in patience. Even starting up System Preferences takes 30-45 seconds and a spinning wheel.

IS THIS FAMILIAR AND NORMAL FOR AN iMac?

I have two retina macbooks and 4 macbook airs, and none of them are this incredibly slow...in fact, I never think about waiting. Which is all I do with this iMac.

Is there a trick?

I have 21.5 inch 4K iMac from late 2015 with 1 TB fusion drive, 3.1 GHz i5, 8 GB.

It became exceptionally slow over the past year. I also had free Avira antivirus installed.

My hard drive was only half full. Checking on Activity Monitor my RAM was most of the time only 60-70% busy and always in the green zone.

I finally decided to deal with slowness. I cleaned up quite a lot cached files (In macOS High Sierra: About this Mac -> Storage -> Manage -> Documents -> File Browser tab), but it didn't help.

Then I decided to uninstall Avira antivirus. Suddenly the computer became much quicker and slowness disappeared!

I would highly recommend uninstalling any cleaning/antivirus software. Also clean up your hard drive from big cache files and any other unused files .

Hope this helps. As my RAM was running at around 60% most of the time, I don't think 8 GB RAM is an issue with these computers, unless your activity shows it's running full.

Hi I'm having the same problem, my old imac got zapped by lightning last year and the insurance co replaced it with a new 2015 model, assuring me it would be just as fast, even though I expressed concerns it wouldnt be. Turns out I was right, its unbelievably slow at times! here's the Etre report in case you can shed any light? Thanks!

Problem description:

Beach ball all the time for simple tasks

Freezing on system upgrades

Generally poorer performance than my old 2009 imac (this new one is an unfortunate insurance replacement after old one got zapped by lightning)

Mar 11, 2017 3:37 AM in response to Denmarkujin

Hi, I have the exact same iMac as Denmarkujin, and the same problem. Thanks for the useful information provided, in particular by MichelPM. Before I choose between the 2 solutions I get from the discussion here, i.e. buying an external SSD drive or just selling my iMac to buy a better model, could you please give me advice based on my EtreCheck Report?

Hi there,

I have the same problem.

It might have something to do with Dropbox

But also without dropbox running my Late 2015 iMac is really really slow.

It takes 20 seconds to open a simple app or my preference panel.

Hello I have the same problem as others on this thread and I've just done the EtreCheck posted below. Any suggestions - apart from switching off Kaspersky?! (already done!) This iMac is a refurbished one from Apple (bought in July) and is still under warranty. Its so much slower than my previous 2009 27" iMac which is hugely disappointing. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.

Hi MichelPM,

My mid level late 2015 iMac (i7,1) Radeon M390 crashed yesterday and I ran the Etre check today. I am wondering if you can help me figure out what's going on with my system. Its the first time its crashed even though I still have an issue with Photos which runs extremely slow after the machine has been on for several hours (both sleep and non-sleep mode). This is what I have from Etre after yesterday's crash:

Same issue here. Brand new machine slow as dog. My old 2009 iMac was way faster. I've already CCC the disk to a 500GB SSD and put it into a USB 3.0 emcloser and plugged it in. Let's see how this does but IIRC when I booted from it to restore it was 20x faster than the internal spindle drive.

How can they sleep at night charging 2K for a system and put a mechanical antique drive in it. The fusion drives aren't that much better. They make it sound all fancy and charge and arm and a leg for them but I've been using Hybrid drives for years.

You definitely have to use SSD if you want good performance. Once my warranty expires in April of 2017 I'm gonna rip this ***** open and plop a nice big SSD disk in it. Maybe two. 🙂

You probably have a 7200-rpm Serial ATA Drive. (Standard HDD). Those are nefariously slow in comparison to modern SSD's (Solid State Drives) that most pc's will have in it. That's probably why it's slow. When Apple replaced your computer, they probably gave you another baseline iMac - fancier insides, but the same type of hard drive that made it super slow in the first place. MacBooks (Regular, Air, and Pro) and all iOS devices use SSD/Flash storage and have for years. It's extremely fast in comparison to regular HDD's that come in baseline desktop Macs and thus don't suffer from the same out-of-the-box speed problems your iMac(s) have suffered from.

You had the option at purchase time to install that SSD if you ordered a custom iMac online or through a brick & mortar Apple Store.

You didn't have to settle for what was in the store.

If you purchased your iMac from an actual physical Apple Store, why didn't you ask quaestions about what you were purchasing/going to buy?

Why didin't you order one online OR purchase a custom model through the store?

I don't understand people who don't do the proper research and ask the proper questions and get the proper information before purchasing an expensive item/product like a computer, especially an Apple computer which is more expensive than your average cookie cutter Windows PC.

Did you purchase a 21 inch screen model or the 27 inch screen model iMac.

Of the 21 inch screen iMacs, none of the base models are very good.

The only 21 inch screen model iMac worth considering is the 4K one that is loaded up with all of Apple's option.

The i7 CPU, 256 or 512 SSD, 16 GBs of RAM.

That is the only future proof and performance oriented configuration that I would ever consider, if I had to order a 21 inch screen iMac model.

All of the other baseline, off the shelf, 21 inch screen iMacs are a joke!

Those are just a basic, average consumer oriented, computing "appliance"!

Basically, a Mac Mini with a bulit in screen!

In my case it was most definitely the 7200rpm spindle drive. It was so slow that the machine was unusable to me. I'm an IT virtualization engineer so I need a system that snaps to every time on multiple instances of systems. Maybe it's ok if all you do is web browse and email which is the norm but I need a good performance boost for when I work from home.

That said I took a 500GB SSD flash disk and threw in a USB 3.0 external case, the little ones and plugged it in. Did a Carbon Copy Clone of the iMac and set the external to be the startup disk. Haven't looked back since. I'm just not in the mood to tear a brand new machine apart to install it internally. Not to mention there's still some warranty on it. Maybe come summer when the warranty expires. In the meantime the system now SCREAMS! VMware running like a champ with Windows 7, 8, 10, 2008R2 and Server 2012 Enterprise. Not all at once obviously! 😁

When a system is having performance issues stop, calm down, take a deep breath, and go after the low hanging fruit first. The IO of the disk, reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and any other "easy" way to try and trouble shoot. Open about this Mac and check the RAM speed, see if they're all reporting alive and well. Open disk utility and check and repair permissions if necessary. There's a bunch of doodles you can check out. Re-Installing MacOS is the LAST RESORT. A system refresh is time consuming, you run the risk of losing some data, and it may not be the problem after all that.

Happy New Year ... Peace and Love

Maybe you are spoiled by SSDs or something.

I don't know.

I am a digital artist, graphic designer, digital painter and illustrator and I get along just dandy still using 7200 RPM drives on my older 2009, 27 inch screen iMac.

My iMac has 16 GBs of RAM and is running older versions of OS X and software though.

I have 4 7200 RPM hard drives.

One in my iMac and 3 as alternate and backup drives connected over older FireWire 800.

My system purrs along just fine and I use very hardware/software resource intense apps.

Sure an SSD will be seriously faster, but I can't see investing in one for my nearly 8 year old iMac, at this late stage.

I would get one for a much newer, used or brand new Mac.

Mine is just too old, now.

My brand new iMac "Late 2015" is SO SLOW. Why?
