When I plug my iPhone into Itunes it wants to set as new or try to restore it from backup. I backup to cloud so why doesn't my itunes recognize my device?

Why does iTunes always want to either restore my iphone or set up as new? I backup everything to iCloud but I wanted to add music to my phone, how do I get past this part? I dont want to restore it or set it up as new

I just called Apple support with the same question. I had an iPhone 6 for about a year, had it set to back up over wi-fi, and then dropped it in water. After replacing the phone and restoring it from the old phone's backup, I used the phone for several months and never set up automatic sync over wi-fi. When I plugged it in to my computer recently, I was only given two options - Set up as a new iPhone or Restore from backup. Choosing Set up as a new iPhone does NOT delete the data on your phone. It just recognizes it as a new device for the computer and starts backing it up. So you're okay to click Set up as new.
