App Store BTS update?

Today at about 5:00pm EST all Mac users in my Call of Duty 4 clan could no longer open their App Store copy of CoD4. However, all of us have several apps that were purchased via the App Store that won't open and some that will. Console shows the following for CoD4 attempting to launch.

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.aspyr.callofduty4_mp.88672[570]): Service exited with abnormal code: 3

So at first I assumed a possible BTS update to Gatekeeper. However, I have Gatekeeper disabled. And just in case I did a codesign verification on CoD4. And just to go 1 step further I even forced my own fully functional Mac developer code signature onto the app. However, none of that worked.

Anyone have any ideas as to why certain Mac App Store apps all of the sudden stopped working across several continents all at the same time?

Aspyr can't do anything for this so a ticket to them won't help. It is affecting hundreds of developers and thousands of apps.

I might try this method for COD4 then and see if it works...just hope it doesn't take all night!

Fast forward several minutes....

...even though I downloaded the COD4 app again today, just went into the Library, Application Support area annnnddd...it's not even there! But is on my computer.

The app has not only disappeared entirely from my computer, but the Application Support folder has now gone too!

This is seriously getting f***ed up!! And to top it all off, the cheeky bar stewards at Aspyr have just had the nerve to message me and ask how I think they're doing!!

SUCCESS!! Okay the app has reloaded and is running!

BUT, in /Library/Application Support/ there is NO FOLDER or icon for COD4.

Nothing!

The game runs, but I am unable to add the saved folder with maps, config etc, back in, because it looks like there is nowhere to put it!

Any suggestions?

In Mac OS, saved information goes in the Application Support folder, not the app itself. The app itself has privileges set that won't allow in-game downloading to write to it.

The whole reason you have to copy the folder before deleting is so that you won't lose all your progress, maps, mods, etc. Those don't get saved into the actual app binary.

Not sure I follow.

Previously before all this drama unfolded, I recall seeing my profile in the COD4 folder along with all the other items.

I'm easily confused right now as it's early hours of the morning.

It appears as though you completely skipped the very first step. You have to backup the user's "Call of Duty 4" folder inside of "Application Support" The raw path would be...

/Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty 4/

But using the "Go to Folder..." option you could just type...

~/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty 4/

In there is all the game data. Putting it into the actual app binary won't do a thing.

Correct, you see all the files, but they aren't the right ones. Get past that part. It's just the app binary. All data files for apps go in the Application Support folder.

The folder won't be there (as I stated) since you previously uninstalled the app. Just run the app 1 time and it will appear.

same problem.Cod4 doesn't open.

first,i deleted all files.and downloaded from app store.then try.and didn't open again?

is there a way for fix it?

It was not condescending at all. I simply posted what has worked for thousands of people and was published by dozens of reputable blogs.
