iPhone charging port repair and replacement options

my less than year old iphone 6 has issues charging. it seems that even with brand new lightning charger cables, it would not charge unless i fiddle with it and look for the exact position in which it does charge. So very unreliable and something is clearly wrong with the port. WHat is the easiest way to get the port replaced?

My father always said "about 80% of electrical problems are bad/dirty connections". Holds true here too! I've been struggling with being un-able to charge my phone for a couple of weeks, bending the cord, using books/weird angles to get just the right spot. I was just about ready to take my out-of-warranty phone to an Apple store when I read about the pin clean method. I bent a small paper-clip open and dug around a little, dust bunnies and there babies fell out. How can that much lint fit in there? I then used canned-air to be sure it was totally clean. Bam. charging!

Thanks for the help/reminder! a clean charge port is a happy charge port!

I had this problem a few hours ago. Went to an apple istore and advised to have it repaired. I hesitated a bit because I want to know what really is the problem. I tried the pin which you use to remove or open the SIM slot to slowly and gently clean it out and lo and behold my 11 month old Iphone 6 plus is clogged with some very small but a bit noticeable debris which I never thought would be there as I am so careful and protective of this gadget. Dust or whatever must have accumulated despite my efforts. It is now charging as we speak. But what works for me might not be an option that's best for others. Just saying...

I'm embarrassed to say how skeptical I was about this... until I got a small paperclip and started digging. I had to use some moderate force and then... gobs of lint came out. I think I finally got all the lint out of the port and now, my problem is solved. Lightning cables make a good, tight connection now and I'm not constantly wiggling it around to get it to charge. Thank you!

I had the same issue with my iPhone 6s wasn’t charging properly unless I fiddle with it or hold it in a certain position but after reading this thread I used a safety pin to clean out debris in the lightening port and it’s working perfectly now. I think all the dust must have accumulated as I put my phone in my jeans / trouser pocket!!

A guy on youtube posted a comment to carefully clean out the port with a toothpick. There might be lint in there. He got dozens of thank yous, so it is probably worth a try.
Dont think I an post a link, but search youtube on "iPhone 6 Charging Port Replacement in 5 minutes, microphone fix, headphone jack repair"

EDIT: OK - I see now someone posted this tip a few days ago.. Still, you might find the video and comments of interest.

I had the same problem last night so I took it to the Genius Bar this afternoon where they determined the port was corroded and non replaceable. Because the phone isn't covered by AppleCare they offered to swap it for another 6s at a cost of $300.

This was a bit of a surprised since I've always kept it in a case since I bought it two years ago and I don't expose it to any kind of extreme weather.

I was just about to order a new phone when I found this thread, so I cleaned it some more with a swab, then a match, and finally a toothpick even though I couldn't see any visible dust. What did I have to lose? When I plugged the charger into an outlet it started up.

If at first you don't succeed try try.....

Thanks everyone for this thread. You all just saved me nearly $800.

I have to say that this post is the BEST find of the day and totally made my day!! I have been living with this issue for over a month now, but after removing several dust bunnies I can keep my phone charging even while moving it around, rotating it, and flipping it over! I bet bringing it to a Genius bar would have resulted in recommendation to purchase latest iPhone... Best money saving tip of the year thus far!! Thanks Tony!!

I just experienced this exact problem and my 6S is under 3 years old: I had to coax the cable at weird angles and pressure to even charge; the vibration from notifications would offset the charging! I just cleaned out my port with a paperclip and it's now charging perfectly. I can actual;y use my phone while it charges, LOL.

Also: it's INSANE how many dust bunnies and lint fell out of that port! Keep them clean 🙂

This is awesome! I was about to take my iPhone 6 to the repair center. Tried the "remove dust using safety pin" technique, and it worked beautifully.

I was struggling with the charging port for weeks, pushing the cord in a specific angle, bending the cable until it starts charging, and then placing a dictionary on the cable to keep it in position 🙂

Cheers!

I have the same problem....charging port that no longer seats sufficiently to charge. I have done the "blow the dust out" and when that did not work, turned off my phone, used a small alcohol wipe (the type used before they give you a shot or draw blood) and gently pushed that into the slot with a needle until it was packed in - gently moved it about and took it out. Let the alcohol evaporate for about five minutes and plugged in my phone. It works....but for how long is anyone's guess. Never had any issue of this type with the old 30 pin plugs.

I was in the exact same situation. Was literally about to take it in to a repair center, $89.99, read the post, attempted to clean out the port and was amazed at how much lint and dust I was able to gently coax out. Plugged it in newly clean and it began charging immediately. No more rubber bands to hold the cord at the exact right angle. Thank you!
