Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

How to get Apple TV 4 to mark a watched video as watched?

My older Apple TV would clear the blue dot once I had viewed a video. The new Apple TV 4 leaves the dot blue, even after I have played the entire video.

Yes, I can force it to be marked as "Watched" with a long press. But I'd much prefer for the watched state to display properly on the Apple TV without my override. (Note that when I look at the video list in iTunes I *do* see the proper markings on the watched and unwatched videos.)

I get the same view as "robshanahan". That is the default view for purchased tv shows in the iTunes app on the 4th gen Apple TV.

Click on "iTunes", go to "purchased", then your show, there's the single long horizontal listing of all seasons purchased. If you have a show that has 9 seasons you have to scroll to the right forever. It's a terrible setup and it needs a better format. HULU has a really great layout for multiple seasons. the Apple TV 4th gen does not.

Old news, I know, but I just realized what Keriah was doing wrong. (Well, right for him, but wrong in regards to the issue.) Marking downloaded content as watched or unwatched works fine. The issue is with purchased content. Apple, in their infinite stupidity, chose to create multiple interfaces for TV series on Apple TV 4.

  1. The one you see under "Computer" works well, and allows you to easily mark episodes.
  2. The GUI for "Favorites" does not let you mark episodes or seasons as watched, but at least you can sort by season.
  3. The interface for "Purchased" is crippled. You cannot mark anything as watched or unwatched, and you must scroll through a massive horizontal list of episodes to get to the most recent. Since this is the default interface for any purchased TV series, it's a horrible design flaw. Even Microsoft's Media Player was better than this, and that's saying a lot.

Obviously, Apple does not care, and refuses to hire competent programmers. Monday's "major" update merely provided folders. Useful, but it did nothing to fix their terrible interface and keyboard.

They have updated the interface and you can now select from different seasons just above the "line" of episodes. Though this news is now pretty old, the thread doesn't note it so I thought I'd point it out.

Regardless, the side-scroll interface is cumbersome and annoying, and the continued inability to mark episodes in the cloud as watched which I may have watched elsewhere (perhaps before I bought it on iTunes, or maybe just during live broadcast) is an oversight even the old original "Mac mini" AppleTV took care of.

It was old news, but still new news. Apple TV 4 is a disappointment. For twice the price, it works half as well. Ever since Tim Cook took over, Apple has been all flash and no function. Things look great, but they work very poorly. Interfaces appear as if they were half finished and poorly conceived. Perhaps instead of trying to get into more markets, Apple should service the markets they have. Computers... My desktop trashcan apparently was what it looked like. It burned out in a week. I should have kept my old Apple TV... and don't even get me started on the telephones. There's an old saying, go home on the horse what brung ya'. Tim Cook, if you are listening, once upon a time, Apple was the most intuitive and reliable computer available... not any more.

And... I'm still trying to figure out how to mark a movie or TV show as watched. Oh... I can ask Siri...

"Siri, mark this show as watched"

"Sorry I can't search what something is about..."

It's hopeless...

Since Tim Cook, there are more and more problems with the user interface. The old Apple with consistency and reliability has been replaced by a new socially conscious Apple that is quickly loosing the ability to write good software in favor of social issues.

My words exactly. Well said. When will Apple say enough is enough and replace the Cook with someone who has substance and creates products that function well... and then look stylish.
