iMessage not working after update iOS 9.1

I finally decided to update my iPhone 6 to 9.1 because I was sick of the update notification in my settings. I really wish I hadn't. iMessage is INCREDIBLY slow now…particularly to the person that I text the most. iMessages take a long time to send which makes back and forth conversation very difficult. I googled and saw other people with similar issues, but have not found anything that will fix this problem. I tried closing the app, turning iMessage on and off, turning my phone on and off, and resetting network settings. Does anyone have any other ideas regarding what I can do to fix this? Never had any problems with iMessage until this update.

Hi,

I'm Actually having the same issue with messaging. I noticed that my phone doesn't use my Apple ID to send iMessage but my Phone number. You will notice that in Settings-Messages-Send&Receive where your phone number is locked and selected.

The problem lies with the way you store the contact. Are you using the plus sign "+" before your area code or Just the area code?

if you use the plus sign "+", try testing and removing the plus sign from your contact and send a SMS. Leave imessage activated and all.. just disconnect from the internet and test a sms.

The phone easily makes switches to send a sms, the same goes for the other way around. It can now easily switch between imessage and normal sms.

The problem surfacing now is that your phone may not recognize the contact as saved in your contact list.

So my solution is that i save two number of the contact, one number with the plus sign "+" and area code and one with only the area code then mobile number.

Apple should definitely look into this issue..

hope this helps you..

bye.

Tried what you said. But under the Messages settings the Send & Receive does not show the "+" sign and when I go to that option, the number under "you can be reached by imessage at" includes the "+" sign as well as the number 1. Through my phone settings, I made sure to not include the "+" sign and under my contacts, I included both types of number - one with the "+" sign and one without it. I even went on my Apple ID account to make sure the "+" sign was not included. And so that checked option still includes the "+" with a number 1. The same issue occurs with Facetime. I went to Apple and they replaced the phone and the same thing happens - I can't use iMessage nor Facetime via cellular data. Everything works with wifi. Apple has escalated the problem. I can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem on the same carrier as me which is T-Mobile. Something still tells me it's a carrier network issue and with iOS 9, we aren't given the option to change and reset the APN settings.

This exact same thing is happening to me! I am also on T-mobile. My problem started on Thanksgiving. I cannot send iMessages or FaceTime if I am not connected to wifi. I went into Tmobile, got a new SIM card, and upgraded from the ) to 6S and the problem still persists. Seeing that you are on T-mobile as well makes me think there is some kind of disconnect between T-mobiles network and iMessage and FaceTime. I am going to go in again today or tomorrow and see what more they can try. No one else in my family though that has an iPhone and Tmobile is having the problem. None of them have a 6 or 6S though.

I just finished chatting with them. This was my third attempt at trying to solve the problem with them. The first time they just did a reset over the air while my phone was off. The second time I went in store and had the SIM replaced. Then I went to the Apple store to get the phone replaced yesterday. They tried everything they could think of to solve the problem. Apple escalated the issue and said they would get back to me. So I decided to chat with T-mobile again stating someone else had the same exact problem and that I tried everything with them and Apple. They are going to call me and connect 3-way in a couple of hours with an Apple specialist to help solve the issue.

I have a question if you don't mind answering. Before all this happened, when I was connected to LTE, the top left of the screen would have "4G LTE" but I noticed now it only has "LTE". I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem but it doesn't seem like a coincidence. Do you remember if yours had "4G LTE" or just "LTE" before the problem?

I got off the phone with a t-mobile technical who was Apple affiliated but didn't work for Apple. They took down all the issues and problems I explained and also mentioned you all were having similar issues. She opened a trouble ticket and said the engineers will get to work on it. It takes about 3 days for them to test the problems, fix and test again, to make sure everything works. I'll keep you posted when I hear back from them.

I also have a similar problem! Got the iPhone 6s Plus about a week before Thanksgiving, and I started being unable to send/receive iMessages unless I was connected to Wi-Fi. SMS seems to work just fine, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing some notifications from various apps when I'm on T-Mobile's cellular network. Also can't make/receive FaceTime calls when I'm not on Wi-Fi. Just got off the phone with Apple Support, they have a ticket open for me and will call me back Friday, so I'll update my post then.

Side note, during my time with T-Mobile, it's only ever said either "4G" or "LTE", never both at the same time.

Cheers!

I'm at work and I finally got a Whatsapp notification without opening the app so I knew it meant something. I tested iMessage and Facebook over the cellular data and everything works! I didn't receive any notification from T-mobile nor Apple saying any ticket was closed or anyone resolved the issue. But everything seems to be working normally now. I hope all of your phones work just as well soon! If not, try resetting it. They may have updated the networks.
