NAS and Apple TV

I am using Apple tv 2nd Generation and in the same Network a Synology NAS is working.

How can I stream Videos from the NAS to my Appletv?

Or - more exactly - how can I view the Contents of the NAS in AppleTV to select streamable Content?

Is there any Special requirement for formats or should the content be kept in the ITunes-App in the Synology NAS to be visible?

I would appreciate if I just could store my movies ina "Movies" Folder, and then browse through that,

I assumed, that mp4 converted movies should be viewable, but I don't even get that far, becaue I cannot see the device in the Computer-Section of Apple TV.

(my other real"Computers" I can see.)

Thx a lot

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

From my limited experience, you want be able to accomplish that without A)jail breaking the ATV2 or B) upgrading to the ATV4. The reason is the ATV2 can only use home share, home share requires itunes to "share" from and if using a NAS a running computer is annoyed nag at least. However, the ATV4 has access to the App Store where you can download Plex, which doesn't require an active iTunes software. Though worth noting, if you have a lot of iTunes purchased content, Plex won't be able to play it without removing the DRM protection. Lots of pros/cons to decide what option works best for your setup...
