The question is very clear - many answers seem to be confused - answering how to do this for Safari does not help if you want to have Chrome deal with the web site. I have systems that do not run on Safari so I have to run on Chrome. So an answer to this question would be great (if there was one), however it seems that although you can do this on an iPhone you cannot do this on an iPad (...bit of a hole there Apple!!!).
As a workaround you can set up bookmarks inside Chrome for these items but that seems to be the only answer at this time.

Not Safari, Chrome was what these 100's of people are asking. It's more popular than Safari.
this would be a nice feature on the iPad Pro, my wife uses Safari for her browsing, our use Chrome for my browsing. So I would like to save chrome shortcuts to websites on my Home screen area, but I cannot. Having off for the favourites or whatever they have. It would be nice if that was available, Regardless of the browser you are using.
Sorry, but you simply can't.
You can still add a website to your home screen via Safari.
Just simply tap the Share button, scroll to find the label on the bottom row called Add To Home Screen, you may modify the name of the web clip, and add it to your home screen.
Ya, well aware of that. She is using Safari as her browser, I use Chrome for my browsing stuff. Was just mostly suggesting that it would be nice to do it either way. But you are well aware that you can't do it from chrome. Zoiks.
I'm not sure this can be classed as a reply. I simply want to vent my frustration over Apple intransigence allowing their own browser preferential treatment over Chrome, which is an infinitely more efficient instrument than Safari. What can you expect from an internet provider which refuse to have a forward delete button.

I have found the easiest way around it is to just use mobile bookmarks. It is very annoying that we can’t just add to home screen like safari.
If you want the Google search page as an icon on your Home screen, download the Google app.
The correct answer is buy an Android device. You cannot make a shortcut on the iPad desktop that will open with chrome. We're lucky enough to have chrome as an app.
Plus with Android you get the free Back/Escape key. And a much better keyboard.
Have a nice browsing experience.
As you say, some confusion here. But I now read your post "although you can do this on an iPhone you cannot do this on an iPad". How is this done on the iPhone then? I found the explanations above that you simply can't pretty accurate as far as I have struggled to do this using Chrome on my iPhone 8.

Yeah,
And get a lot of free and “open” nasty malware and viruses to go with that Google Hemroi...err, Android device, also.
Like this one. One of the worst Android malware/viruses EVER in the sordid history of Google Android.
Awesome...NOT!
If using Safari then go to the website that you want to add, tap the 'share' icon (the square with the upward pointing arrow) to the right of the URL address field, and on the popup tap 'Add To Home Screen' on the bottom row of icons
I am not sure if I understand what you want to do. You can't make a homescreen shortcut in Google chrome as you can in Safari on iOS devices. If you are asking about the google chrome app it can be downloaded in the App Store. To create a homescreen shortcut in safari, go to the website and tap on the share button (square with arrow) then the option add to home screen should be visible. -AJ
I am, not You are...but you are too. Yeah, and siri needs work too.
