safari reloading loop when google searching

hi,

I've got a problem when doing Google searches in Safari on my MacBook Air. When I do a search in either Google or Google images it returns the results but then immediately reloads them again and will get stuck in a reloading loop. This will continue until I click into another Safari tab and back again and then I can look through the results

I'm on OS X El Capitan and the latest Safari (this happened on the last OS before the update too) and I've cleared cache, history etc. It doesn't happen with other search engines and I downloaded Chrome and it was fine there too using Google, this seems unique to Safari and Google together!

grateful for any thoughts!

Chris

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.
  6. Load a few web pages and observe how well Safari performs in Recovery mode, compared to how it has been.

Restart your Mac normally and describe your results.

If the problem does not occur in Recovery mode, but returns after restarting your Mac, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. The applicable section is "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons".

If that doesn't help, write back for more suggestions.

John, Thanks again for your continued help.

I followed the steps and in recovery mode and Safari was fine, I don't know if this is significant but when I was searching in recovery mode in Google it would pull up the suggested results as i was typing, e.g. if I typed face then the results page would populate with Facebook, when I restarted and tried normally this doesn't (and never has as far as i can remember) happen, Facebook would be suggested in the drop down but the results wouldn't appear as I typed as in recovery mode, i hope my ramblings make some kind of sense!!

I tried the "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons" you suggested and i'm still getting the same thing, this time I left the screen to keep reloading and after a minute of two I get a screen saying Google detected unusual traffic from my computer and asks me to enter a random character string, when i do this i'm back in the reloading loop until I get the unusual traffic thing again!

Chris, I don't use Google so I have no explanation for its behavior. What I was able to find was this Google forum question which may be relevant:

https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!category-topic/websearch/how-do-i using-google-search/mNLcP4TqZ1o

It discusses turning off autocomplete, which may be a function of having a Google account. If you don't believe it is relevant write back and I'll try to come up with other possible reasons.

You might also consider clearing Safari's history. History menu > Clear History...
