iPhoto crashes after opening repeatedly

hmm can't explain the 20 min thing some of you are experiencing as mine has been stable for the last few hours. I think Terence is correct about the the google licence expiring a while back but can't explain why iPhoto is suddenly throwing this error? Also faces isn't updating on mine (a good thing lol) probably because it too uses an expired google licence. I can still post to photo streams though, so somewhere iPhoto knows its online.

I read somewhere it might be possible to re-write the googlemaps.html & googlesearch.html files to point to a valid account so might try this later...

I doubt apple will provide a fix for this as they ditched iPhoto for 'photos' - their fix will be to upgrade to el capitan and photos…not something I want to do.

Faces has nothing to do with Google. It's possible that someone recently changed something online and these apps are crashing when they interact with that.

The maps in iPhoto 9.4.3, 9.4.5 and Aperture 3.4.5 continued to work till August this year. Since then the Places view will no longer show the Google Maps and only iPhoto 9.5.1 or later and Aperture 3.5.1 or later will show the maps. But neither app - Aperture 3.4.5 or iPhoto 3.4.5 did crash when trying to show the info panel with a places name. I tested again with Aperture 3.4.5 and it is still possible to open the Info panel in Places and to see the places name, but with an empty map without pins. So it is probably not a change on the server side that is causing the crashes now. Then Aperture would probably be having the same problems.

Thanks for the workaround of deleting those 2 files. I have OS/X 10.8.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3 and beginning yesterday whenever I started iPhoto it crashed. I tried all four iPhoto start-up options (holding the option and command keys down) and iPhoto was stable - until I clicked 'info'. Today I found this thread and deleted the 2 google files. Now, I have been able to turn 'info' on and off repeatedly and close and restart iPhoto without crashing. I think I had it open for more than 20 minutes too - I'll leave it open now all day (hopefully).

Could those who crash after 20 minutes have somehow reacquired the google files?

Also, Activity Monitor showed that real memory usage for iPhoto went over 550mb while I was scrolling events and faces and has remained there. I guess that's normal behavior though.

This seems to work for me. I did not need that Dora the Explorer stuff anyway.

It's weird that this happened everywhere at once; like everyone else I've got OX 10.8.5 and iPhoto crashed upon opening...

I've had problems happen to me yesterday, 18/11/15. Yes, I am behind on releases (not that I am bothered) but my system and iPhoto are compatible with each other and have worked flawlessly up until now.

My specific problem is that iPhoto will open but when I click 'info' for any image, it crashes right away.

I am on 10.8.5 (I don't care) with iPhoto 9.4.3 (again I don't care). I've submitted the problem via iPhoto Feedback but not heard anything yet.

Clearly though this is a problem that is not limited to the myself as I have read about the exact same thing elsewhere, nd it appears to be causing problems elsewhere.A

Anyone know what my problem or the genera problem is?

I have just resolved the exact same issue.

While holding the option/cmd buttons, launch iphoto. Keep the keys pressed until the app starts and there are 4 repair options on the screen. I ran through all 4 from top to bottom. The app crashed while running the first 3 but the 4th one resolved the problems.

It all stemmed from teh app opening with the photos but the sidebar for 'info' was automatically selected. Once the resets above were done, this stopped, the app opens now without the side bar

Sorry but this has not worked for me.

Thing is, I could understand an individual needing to do the above from time to time, but for dozens at the same time needing to complete such work? I know nothing about computers - I just turn them on and want them to work - but if this has hit so many people all at the same time, doesn't that suggest something more common and widespread due to other factors?

No. iPhoto libraries can get damaged/corrupted for a number of reasons, interruption while writing to the database for example, and repairing as shown below usually fixes it:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and continue to hold down until the First Aid window appears. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.

2 - apply Option #4, Rebuild Database.

3 - if necessary, repeat with Option #1, Repair Permissions.

Have you tried the following 2 steps, posted by Huxly647 earlier in this thread. It worked for several of us with the problem of crashing after clicking "info". (btw, the first step is to click Finder and the "Go" menu item. Then click "Go to folder ..." at the bottom and enter /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources and click "go". Then delete the 2 files..

Iphoto no longer crashes, places doesn't work but it doesn't bother me too much.

The google.html workaround worked for me.

Note : I think that my iPhoto is quite faster without the google map files. Strange but still good.

I have the same issue, crashing in the same location. I tried all 4 steps of repairing and then rebuilding my library, tried Safe Mode, tried throwing away the plist, then finally tried a brand new empty library. In all cases, it crashed when opening the info panel. The only thing I've found to avoid the crash is to turn off the network connection.

I renamed just the googlemap.html and that worked for me. No Places anymore, but at least I don't have to turn off the network to use iPhoto!
