I'm trying to encrypt a 512GB USB Flash Drive on MacBook Air OS X EL CAPITAN, However when I click on "Encrypt", create a password and then click "Encrypt Disk" I get this error "A partition, not a whole disk, is required for this operation." Help?

MacBook Air Mid 2012

Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

60.7 Flash Storage

OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.1
