shutting down

computer running el capitan just shuts of and will not respond to any keys but will come back on if I open and close cover. Also notice processor fan is running a lot. Brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) maxed out. Can this be fixed or did I just get a dud for computer

  1. Remove Norton / Symantec
  2. Remove "codec-m"
  3. Remove "Advanced Mac Cleaner"
  4. If you don't know what "AppaRajah" is then remove it also. Safari menu > Preferences... > Extensions. Remove any Extensions that you do not recognize or are certain you require. None are required for normal operation

Norton did nothing to prevent those problems. All it appears to be doing for you is crashing your Mac. Uninstall it.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

One or more of the following may be applicable:

Uninstall Norton Internet Security for Mac

Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh by using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility

RemoveSymantecMacFiles

To remove "Advanced Mac Cleaner" read below.

You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.

Refer to the following Apple Support document: Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support. "Advanced Mac Cleaner" will require following the instructions in that document with the following modifications:

Under the section Optionally remove other adware files, add the following to the list of files to delete:

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.pcv.hlpramc.plist

  • Restart your Mac.
  • Then: Repeat the above instructions with the following two files:

~/Library/AdvancedMacCleaner

/Library/Application Support/amc

Note the difference in the path names. One is preceded by the ~ (tilde), the other is not. As long as you use the Go to Folder method you will find the files that require deletion.

  • Then: Open  (Apple menu) System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. If there is an entry in that list named "Advanced Mac Cleaner" remove it from the Login Items list using the [—] (minus) button below it.
  • Then: Open the Applications folder by using the Finder's Go menu > Applications. If there is a folder in it named "Advanced Mac Cleaner", drag it to the Trash.
  • Finally: empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware.

I found a couple of the items suggested but not

AppaRajah

codec-M

Although they still show up when I run EtreCheck. I appreciate the help. This is what it says now, if you have any other suggestions

The instructions I linked are Norton's removal instructions. If they don't work for you, please contact Norton for support. Make it absolutely clear to them that you want to eradicate their product from your Mac, completely, permanently, and irrevocably, and that you are not interested in evaluating a newer version or trying to make any of their products work. Norton / Symantec has had well over a decade to make their products compatible with Macs and there is no reason to believe they will ever succeed. Your Mac will not operate properly with "anti-virus" garbage installed.

If you used Apple's Go to Folder method to find the three files in the instructions I posted, and they do not exist, then the EtreCheck report is flawed and cannot be relied upon. I have no reason to suspect that is the case, so please confirm you are following Apple's instructions correctly. To summarize them, copy the following line, and paste it into the Finder's Go > Go to Folder... field.

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.pcv.hlpramc.plist

What you see will look exactly like this:

User uploaded file

If it does not look like the above, stop and describe what you do see.

If it does look like the above, click the Go button.

One of two things will occur: either that dialog box will remain but the text The folder can't be found will appear at the bottom of it, or a Finder window will open with that file selected. Either way, stop there and describe your results.

I understand. A lot of programs will crash and your Mac simply won't work properly as long as Norton remains installed. If their published uninstallation instructions don't work, you need to avail yourself of their technical support resources.

"Advanced Mac Cleaner" needs to be eradicated as well, and if you continue with the instructions above you will succeed.

If you decide that Mac is has been corrupted by those and other programs to the point you believe it's worth erasing it completely and reconfiguring it from the Time Machine backup, write back for instructions. As extreme as that measure may be, it's guaranteed to work.
