When Wrist Detection is enabled, the present behaviour is correct (remaining unlocked until removed).

Check also that you are wearing your watch snugly on the top of your wrist (neither too loosely, nor too tightly). If it is worn too loosely, the back of your watch can temporarily lose contact with your skin from time to time. Your watch will then believe that it has been removed from your wrist, in which case it will lock automatically. This may be why you previously needed to enter your passcode more often.

Is your iPhone on and awake? The Apple Watch will not require the passcode if to you unlock your iPhone.

To clarify: this can apply, but only if you have enabled that setting (on your iPhone, in the Watch app: My Watch > Passcode - Unlock with iPhone).

With Passcode turned on, Unlock with iPhone enabled and Wrist Detection enabled: after putting it on your wrist, your watch will unlock after whatever you do first - either unlocking manually (with the passcode) or unlocking your iPhone. As described previously, it will then remain unlocked until the watch is removed from your wrist (or locked manually).
