Screen sharing disconnect puts display to sleep

Just wanted to confirm that I am also having this issue for El Capitan Mac Mini's. If attach a keyboard and disconnect from the machine after using screen share it works fine.

My problem is similarly situated in terms of jms703's above. We are using these as kiosk displays for information, and when a user goes to remote in, the screen is turned on. As soon as that user disconnects, the screen is turned. Similar to a screen saver mode. Even if all power settings are set to not allow this behavior.

Found this on another Apple forum:

I have El Capitan, Mac Mini. Turning off VNC used to turn off the local display, but no longer. Typing the above command into Terminal did the trick.

sometimes if I restart the mac mini it stops doing it for a few days but will do it again...

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

I have discovered that switching to 'view' mode instead of 'control' before closing the window stops the screen from switching off.

Not a perfect solution, buy a convientish work around.

I tried to replicate this, but I couldn't. I don't have a Mac Mini, but trying this with an iMac, I removed the batteries from the keyboard and mouse, and connected via Screen Sharing from my rMBP. Closing the connection or quitting Screen Sharing always left the screen turned ON.

I would suggest restarting the Mac Mini in Safe Mode. This will probably require temporarily connecting a keyboard and mouse. Then restart normally and see if this has helped.

I would expect that this would be hard to replicate as for me it does happen intermittently. As I said, sometimes restating the machine sometimes gives me a few days before this issue reoccurs.

I too am having this issue on a mac mini (with no peripherals) after upgrading to El Capitan.

After connecting a trackpad I am able to wake the screen up, but without it I am left with no option but to reconnect via screen sharing.

Very annoying!

Restarting the mac mini seems to fix it for a while, some times for a few days, sometimes only for an hour or so.

2011 mac mini server running el captain with no peripherals.

Mac mini is connected via hdmi to my tv. I use my macbook air to control it via screen sharing.
Problems seems to have started after upgrading to el captain.

Had a bit of time talking to Apple support about this one - first they suggested a PRAM reset and SMC reset. That fixed things temporarily, so then they've cleared out Caches, LaunchAgents and StartupItems from /Library and ~/Library.

Hopefully that's fixed it, but if it's only temporary, will report back with what is suggested next!

I've read through all replies in this thread. I have the same problem.

setup:

Macbook air, Yosemite 10.10.2 connecting to a Mac Mini with El Capitan.

Problems started to occur after upgrading the Mac Mini to El Capitan. Today I adjusted the energy save settings, computer sleep, on the macbook air to never. Then problem stopped. I could even close the connection without the Mac Mini being affected. Not sure it will stick. Time will tell.

I just ran into this issue, and in fact do have a keyboard and mouse connected. I was able to stop the behavior by disabling and re-enabling Screen Sharing in System Preferences. I don't think I had a mouse plugged in at system startup, so my guess is that it just checks for keyboard/mouse presence at launch, and behaves according to that initial state.

So, for those having the issue where a kb/mouse aren't present, it may be worth it to try plugging a kb/mouse in at startup then disconnecting them, and seeing if it persists, just to pin down if that's the determining factor.

A little annoying to say the least -- this should really be a checkbox in the Security or Screen Sharing preference pane.

Thanks. I have no mouse and keyboard so can't try it out. I urge someone else in this thread to try though. My changes to the energy savings settings didn't work.

My "effect" changed all of a sudden. Same settings on both the Macbook Air and the Mini, but now the Mini doesn't go to sleep, but the screen saver turns on when I close the Macbook Air or logout from Screen Share.

This issue is extremely annoying as I use Screen Share almost all the time. Any update from Apple or other users?

Running Sierra here on a Mac Mini connected to TV with no keyboard/mouse. Disconnecting from VNC would blank the external video and nothing I tried would fix it. This command worked great for me! Thanks!
