Old .pkg files, unneccesary?

I have searched the forum but have been unable to find the answer to my question.

Are old .pkg files neccesary? I have lots of package files for programs that I currently use, but do I still need the actual .pkg files? I also have old OS X software updates and other OS X Apple programs. Do I need to keep these .pkg files, or can I delte all .pkg files.

Thanks.
