How do I connect my Ipod Shuffle to my Lincoln MKX?

I need to connect my Ipod Shuffle to our Lincoln MKX, I have a cable(1/8" RCA to USB), but when I plug it in I cannot get it to be recognized by the Lincoln audio system. I have read MANY internet postings of this same basic problem, but no solutions, can you help me??
