Tracking lost/stolen IPod

I recently lost my IPod and feel that someone probably picked it up. I noticed when I opened my I Tunes account that it showed my IPod's serial number, so I was wondering if there is any way for I Tunes to track if someone else opens an account with that particular serial number. Please respond!

Although there are some interesting points made regarding theft and one losing their iPod, I fully understand the point that Oz is making.

For every iPod that iTunes sees, the serial # is RIGHT there. ****, they even know how many computers I have authorized.

But with that said, IMO, by the time someone were to make a police report, the lost / stolen iPod would already be in use by someone else.

It be nice if a stolen iPod would go into some type of locked mode with no way of unlocking unless taken to Apple w/ proof of purchase and ID. But that would only happen in a perfect world.

The whole "Big Brother" paranoia is just that - paranoia. IMO, if you've got nothing to hide then why worry about tracking and monitoring? I for one don't worry about it but then I'm not engaged in activities that monitoring/tracking/tapping are designed to detect. Thinking that I could be a target of some government conspiracy based on monitored even though I'm innocent is just flattery anyway.

Besides, I'd rather have the ability to find my property than let it disappear for the noble cause democratic anonimity. And not all cases of property disappearing are due to someone's stupidity or carelessness. There are people out there who actually steal from even the most careful.

So it would be okay for the police to come by your house once a week and look thru your drawers and closets?
Pull you over every few days on the way to work and search your car "just because"?

After all, (I'm assuming) you have done nothing wrong, so you have nothing to hide, so what's the problem?

Ya, as Chris points out, it may not even be registered. My iPod is over a year old. I never bothered to register it and in fact rarely register anything with companies because A) registration is not a requirement for warranty coverage and B) those registration cards are often used more to add your name to marketing and telemarketing lists. I find it far better to simply safe my receipts for expensive items and present that as proof of purchase if and when service is needed.
