AVI files in browsers don't play (QT logo with question mark)

Hello all,
I'm encountering a weird problem.

I don't know when it began, but I cannot play .avi videos (containing ANY codec) in any browser anymore.
In Safari I get a faded QuickTime logo with a question mark on top, and in Camino or Firefox I get a QuickTime logo without anything, as if it were still loading.
Camino/FF also say "video/x-msvideo Object" in the title bar, and calling aboutlugin shows that that MIME type is (supposedly) taken care of by the QuickTime plugin.

Opening the .avi files through QuickTime Player works perfectly, and dragging them onto Safari's icon (whilst pressing command and option to "force" it to open it), it works. On Camino this doesn't happen, but neither browser opens them through the network, not even putting the video on the local webserver and using http://localhost/blah.avi.

I've installed Perian, 3ivX and DivX. I manually uninstalled DivX (especially the QT components and the plugin) and 3ivX using the latter's uninstaller. Perian, anyway, should be enough.
In fact, I also dragged Perian.component out of /Library/Quicktime, and both browsers DID show the QuickTime progress bar but did not play
anything, neither audio nor video. QuickTime Player did the same.
Putting Perian.component back into the QuickTime folder, the files play again in QT Player, but not in the browsers.

As I said, this happens ONLY with .avi files. Any other video format, including .wmv, works perfectly.

Just for the sake of it, I created a brand new additional user and tried it: .avi videos don't play in broser for the new user either.
I also downloaded and reinstalled QuickTime, and checked the MIME type settings in the QuickTime pane in System Preferences, resetting them to the default. I also ran AppleJack, just in case. Still no luck whatsoever.

I'm running OS X 10.4.8 (with QuickTime 7.1.3) on an iMac Core 2 Duo.

Could someone suggest me how to fix this problem? I've already googled up, but although other people have mentioned a similar problem (although never related to a single file type), I haven't been unable to track the issue down since I doubt that the QT plugin leaves any logs (I haven't found them anywhere, at least.)

Thank you in advance

You may also wan to check for conflicts with "CASIO AVI Importer.component" and/or "XVIDDelegate" if installed. In addition, if you have VLC installed, check your "Internet Plug-Ins" folder to see if there is a VLC plug-in installed. If so, try removing it as it is known to create conflicts.

"checked the MIME type settings in the QuickTime pane in System Preferences, resetting them to the default."
Double check to make sure the "video" box is enabled. This will enable you to play .avi files with-in your browsers.

VLC media player works for me in playing .avi files. I have made this player my default player to play all my .avi files.

I have neither the Casio AVI nor the XVIDDelegate components installed; and I do have the VLC player, but I never saw any plugin related to VLC. A weird thing I noticed, though is that when I right click a file playable by VLC in the Finder and hover on "Open with", I get two VLCs which apparently refer to the same application (I only have one VLC on my hard drive).

These are the QT components I have:
octavarium:/Library/QuickTime jollino$ ls -l

The "Disabled Plug-ins" folder is empty, and so is "Internet Plug-ins" in my user's Library (I have no QuickTime folder at all for my own user).

Comparing to my original message, the only addition is DivXBrowserPlugin, as I reinstalled DivX hoping it would somehow fix some spurious accidentally missing files. Alas, it didn't work.

Yes, the "video" box is enabled. There are actually two AVI entries, one that just says "AVI video" and one that says "Audio/Video Interleaved (AVI)", but no combinations of them seem to work.
I asked a friend who could play avi videos in his browser and he said that only the first one was enabled.

The weird thing is that if I disable both, my browsers will save the file, just as expected. So it seems that it's the QuickTime plugin having some problems with the application/x-msvideo files. If only there were a way to have it log the errors to disk...

As for VLC, I do use it, but I'm talking about playing AVI files right in the browser, rather than having to download them and open them separately. It often happens that I have to check out a plethora of .avi files, and this way it becomes a pain.

I've also tried to reinstall QT after deleting the two plugin files related to QT, t oforce them to be updated to the latest version. Now their last modified date is September 2nd (before it was August 26th), but it still doesn't work.
I also used Diablotin to check that there were no spurious plugins or components, but everything seems right.

I really can't understand what the problem might be, because:
1. AVI files open perfectly in QuickTime Player
2. AVI files (MIME type: application/x-msvideo) show a faded QT logo with a question mark in Safari, and a non-faded QT logo alone in Camino and Firefox
3. The same thing happens also when disabling all other plugins except QuickTime.
