What is the "lsd" process and why does it keep dying and restarting

I've got a process called "lsd" on my Mac that is running between 20% and 90% on cpu usage. It runs for a few seconds, dies, and restarts. The crash log seems to indicate a kernel protection issue.

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)

Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000700000096000

Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

What is this process? Should it be there, and if so, how does one fix it to stop crashing. If it shouldn't be there how did it get there and how do you get rid of it.

I just did a new install from the recovery disk of El Capitan and I've run ClamXV with in the last few weeks.

It's not documented. As far as I can tell, it's involved in maintaining the Launch Services database. You don't seem to have taken my suggestions, and I don't have any others, so good luck.

So far that seems to have done the trick. It's been about 15 minutes and I have not had lsd crash once.

Hi Etresoft,

thanks for your help. Somehow the problem seems to have solved on its own.. Maybe it was linked to some activity after software update. I'll get back if the problem comes back.
