Independent Volume for External Instrument Channel Strips

I have the following:

A. Macbook Pro with MainStage 3.2.2 (MS3)

B. Audio/MIDI Interface - Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 (AK1) connected via usb .

C. MIDI Keyboard and Tone Module - Yamaha Motif ES6 (ES6) via MIDI In&Out to #1 above.

D. MIDI Controller - Korg NanoKontrol (KNK) via usb.

My intention is to use mostly the ES6 as my sound source or tone module in MS3 (and MS3’s Ultrabeat once in a while) controlling everything from MS3.

I also intend to use ES6 as the only MIDI keyboard and KNK as the only slider/fader-type MIDI controller.

What I want to do is create splits/layers in MS3 using (1) ES6 sounds and (2) using KNK to control volume of each instrument.

So, what I did is:

1. Create a patch.

2. In the new patch, create 4 channel strips of "External Instrument" type with the following parameters:

Where "X" is from 1 - 4:

a. MIDI Input - In Audio Kontrol 1

b. MIDI Output - Out Audio Kontrol 1

c. MIDI Channel - Channel "X"

d. Format - Stereo

e. Input - Input 1-2

f. Output - Output 1-2

3. In each External Instrument Channel Strip, I set the following in the Inspector:

a. Send Program Change check box to checked, and value of 29

b. Send Bank Select checkbox to checke, Bank MSB of 63 and Bank LSB of 0.

c. I then set the other 3 Channel strips the same except for different ProgramChange, Banks MSB and Banks LSB, of course to get different sound for each of the 4 Channels.

Expectation:

Each fader (Channel Strip or KNK faders) will independently control the volume of each channel/Instrument in the splits/layers.

Each Mute/Solo button will also independently control each channel/Instrument in the splits/layers.

Results:

Unfortunately, Volume Control for each External Instrument Channel Strip IS NOT independently happening.

Testing:

Here is what I did to test it:.

a. I first lowered ALL sliders/faders for the 4 External Instrument Channels I setup. No sound as I played the keyboard, as expected.

Then,

b. I raised the fader for JUST Channel 1 or External Instrument 1 and I hear ALL 4 External Instrument Sounds. I only expected the instrument in Channel 1 to come out of my speakers.

Then,

c. I raise the fader for Channel 2 or External Instrument 2 and I hear what seems to be, again, all 4 from Channel 1 PLUS all 4 again.

Same result when I raise Channel 3 and 4 faders. It seems like end up with 4 instruments x 4 channel per key on my keyboard when I raise all 4 faders.

ANY HELP is appreciated. Thanks for reading to this point int the long post.

In layout mode, create vertical faders(drag to the layout screen, size, copy, paste X 3, arrange). Assign channel, CC#, etc. in the screen control inspector>hardware input. In edit mode, select a fader and assign it to one of your channel strip instruments>volume>saved volume and max/min range in the inspector below. Repeat for each channel strip.

Thanks, lifenoise. I actually have 8 faders as KNK as 8 faders. I did that.

When I raise that fader, I STILL get all 4 sounds in all 4 channels come out.

One difference I noticed though is you have this:

While I got this ("Fader 1" instead of "Ctrl 21(21)")

Which should be fine I think because that is how I named my fader.

And that is also how I assigned them in "Assignement & Mappings".

That is ok, right?

Have you tried using the assign feature in layout. Select a fader, then in the screen control inspector, select assign and move the corresponding fader on the keyboard controller. MainStage will learn the parameter being sent. Also, edit mode> concert level>MIDI settings, make sure that the send unassigned MIDI to all channel strips is unchecked.

whoa. ok. I think I know what is going on.

I actually use that "Assign" feature. I use it a lot and it is the one I used for my Korg NanoKontrol sliders to do this. However, for some reason, When I "learn" the sliders, it insists on being in Channel 1. If I change it manually, the fader does not move on the screen as I move the physical slider. It gives me the impression that it can only transmit in channel 1 (as I now noticed in the 4th pic I posted in my previous post/reply)?

I tried the steps again ("Assign" feature), but this time I used my Motif ES6 sliders. It works on the Motif ES6. I guess this shows Motif ES6 can transmit in multiple channels? Is that how your MP9000 works too?

Thanks.

ok. thanks.

actually, upon more research of this nanoKontrol2 (sorry I had to find manual since I got this one used and no manual), there is some Korg editor software to change/rewrite what each fader/button/know on the nanoKontrol2 does. i will give that a shot.

Meanwhile, problem solved!!! U da wo/man, lifenoise! THANKS SO MUCH!
