how can I identify a defective internal hard drive that needs replacement on an early 2009 macpro running el capitan

Mac Pro (Early 2009), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

A good place to start is System Information (Option key down while clicking Apple Menu). In Hardware, click on SATA/SATA Express and look for SMART status in the bottom right pane for each HD listed in the top right pane. Unless the status is OK, it won't say Verified. If the drive is totally dead, look for a missing listing for a drive bay you know is filled.
