Apple Extreme and Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule and just bought an Apple Extreme with a Lacie 4TB Hard Disk to attach to it. I had been backing up both my wife's computer and mine on my Time Capsule and was running out of room. When I installed the Apple Extreme it configured it as an extension of the Time Capsule, but I haven't been able to get both to show green. Do I need another ethernet cable from my cable modem - one for the new extreme and one for the old? I would like to use the Extreme and Drive for my computer only and back up my wife's on the old Time Capsule. What do I need to do this?

You need at least one ethernet cable.. but it depends on the configuration which you will plug into.

Normally I would say plug AE wan port into the TC lan port...

But you can also set it up with both connected directly to the cable modem.. if it is also a router.

What model is your cable modem??
