How to install new OS operating system?

I downloaded the new OS (12.3.1). I went to install it but I received an error message that I needed more space. I found the mother load in iTunes with multiple backups of iPhone and deleted those. I have plenty of space now, but I can't figure out how to get back in and get the OS installed. I went to the apple icon--> software update --> and I see a light grey box that says "downloaded" but there is no "install" button to click anymore. Beneath the picture of the mountains. there is an option to click "update" and I did that. It says "installing" then I click on "about this mac" and it still lists me as having the old operating system. I have also tried restarting the computer. What else can I do??

TIA!!

It looks like you are confused. The most recent OS is 10.11.1.

I think that you are looking at iTunes. The most recent version of iTunes is 12.3.1.23.
