Boot Camp Assistant hanging at “Downloading Windows support software”

I’m running Yosemite, 10.10.5 on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014).

I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO file to a 16GB flash drive and attempted to install Boot Camp. Twice now I’ve had the same result: the Boot Camp Assistant runs for maybe 20 minutes, reformatting my USB drive and loading a bunch of files on it, and then hangs with my progress bar at 60% completion while stating: Downloading Windows support software, where it hangs (for a couple hours now).

Are you using the same USB for the Windows ISO and your USB Installer, both? You need to use a ISO downloaded from Microsoft as input to BCA. The USB Installer disk is erased and formatted by BCA. If the Download Software is hanging, try a wired connection, if you are on a wireless network.

(1) I downloaded the Windows ISO file onto the USB flash drive, then copied the ISO file to my desktop. The original file on the USB file was duly erased during the Boot Camp setup.

(2) I am on a wireless network. I will try a wired connection.
