Maintenance of d2 Hard Drive Extreme?

Recently I have been having intermittent connection issues to my external drive. http://www.lacie.com/support/desktop-storage/d2-extreme-triple/

Should I be doing any regular maintanance function to keep in good working order? I tried running First Aid on the drive today, and received an error message that it could not be completed.

Help?

First suspicion is the AC Power Supply, second is the cabling.

There is no regular maintenance required; FWIW, all hard drives will fail at some point: some sooner, others later. That is why I have 2 complete backups of everything strewn across 3 external hard drives. If one goes, I still have another backup.
