calendar only opens half height since El Capitan

I have just discovered the same behavior on my computer with EC. The Calendar app opens half height but only when I have the calendar list on the left. I've deleted plist and started over but the problem persists. Any more feedback or ideas on this issue?

I, too, am having this problem.

TL;DR:

Hide your calendar list on the sidebar, and the window will open normally.

Details:

I, too, am a programmer-type and know my way around this stuff. The plist-deletion solution did not work for me. Neither did any of the Command+resize suggestions.

I can confirm that **as long as the calendar list is open on the left** El Capitan's Calendar opens around 1/3 height (it's not exactly half). If the calendar list is closed, the calendar opens normally.

In the unlikely chance an actual free-range Apple engineer is reading this, here are the steps to replicate:

1. Open Calendar in El Capitan 10.11.3 on a 27"inch late 2013 iMac.
2. Click the "Calendars" button in the upper left header so the calendar list and mini-calendar are visible on the left sidebar
3. Maximize the calendar window (not full-screen, but drag the edges or option+green button)
4. Quit the app
5. Reopen Calendar. The window should be roughly 1/3 height.
6. Now, click the "Calendars" button again to hide the calendar list and mini-calendar
7. Quit the app. (Note: there is no need to manually resize the window).
8. Restart the app. The window should be back to its original maximized height.

Option+quit has no effect. Deleting the plist preferences file has no effect.

Not sure if it matters, but I have Moom installed. I also have multiple monitors (2x 27" cinema displays on either side of the iMac). Since the buggy window height a) doesn't re-open exactly at half-height, b) doesn't correlate to any height Moom might set, c) all three desktops are the same height and are aligned horizontally, and d) since this problem only started about two weeks ago (around the time of the 10.11.3 update??), it seems unlikely these are the cause.

I tried this solution. It didn't work. The problem resumed as soon as I quit and restarted iCal.

For the last 3 weeks or so I have the same problem. And I agree, with the list open on the left side, the window always opens incorrectly for me. The width parameter is retained but NOT the height. I do not run any 3rd party software that manages windows for me, or modifies Finder behavior. I did a clean install of El Capitan. (has always been my preference and I'm willing to take the time to reinstall all my software) PS, I've been running Capitan since it's release, it is not a recent install.

It works exactly like this for me. Full screen if the calendar tab is off and half screen if it is on. Odd

I followed the instructions kindly given by EcoGreg, but it made no difference.

Just a little thing but for some reason really annoying! Only started this past week, for no known reason!

I have the same problem. Going through the procedure EcoGreg suggests doesn't help me.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the part about making the window changes using the command key. I'm just supposed to hold down cmd while resizing the window to full size, right? If that's right, I've tried going through EcoGreg's procedure a couple of times with no luck.

Steve Singer's procedure did help in some way. It opens in full size but it only does so if I've hidden the calendar list before I quit the app. But I want the default setting to preview the calendar list as well, so this just leaves me with a new problem.

Can anyone help here?

This issue seems to happen in random patterns. There must be some commonality, so trying to find that.

I cannot make iCalendar misbehave, so I cannot reproduce the issue to troubleshoot. Makes no difference if Sidebar Calendar list open or closed.

There are several threads on this issue here on Apple forums.

For everyone still having the problem, if you open iCalendar in a different User account, does the problem persist?

In your normal account, do you use Microsoft Outlook or Exchange? (There are some reporting the issue going away w/o Exchange, try removing link to Exchange Calendar)

Do you use any other Calendar programs? (google calendar, etc…)

Have you deleted your iCal plist?

Did you use Migration Assistant or do a clean install for El Capitan?

There is one other location in User Library that is tied to "Window Size" and that is in the "Saved Application State" > com.apple.iCal.savedState> (Folders which ones will vary) If you have data2 folder, this should update when you make changes to iCal. You can check the Date/Time/Modified to make sure it is updating properly.

If people respond to the above, I will pursue this if I can. Hamstrung because I don't have the problem.

1. In a different user account, with only the default calendars: the problem does not exist for me.

2. I do have 2 exchange calendars in my list: both work related. So I won't delete those from my current account. I will however make a current bootable copy later and test it with the removal of those 2 linked exchange calendars. (one is linked directly, the other is linked through iCloud.

3. I do not link to any google calendars.

4. I do not use any other calendar programs.

5. I haven't deleted my plist yet, I didn't want to risk having to recreate my calendar and links in case something went haywire.

6. This is a clean install done about a week after El Capitan was released.

7. I do not have a folder of Saved State information for iCal. (there are for other programs of course)

Thank you for your post, I hadn't come across any links referencing possible problems with Exchange calendars being linked, yet.

Like a few others posting here, this only started for me about 4 weeks ago and I ignored it until life slowed down and it bothered me more.

brief edit to my last response (wouldn't late me save it, so I had to create this second one)

2. I added my Exchange account to the newly created user account, and the problem did NOT manifest. But I can't add the second Exchange account since it is one delegated to me, so I would have to request it.

5. I decided to take the slight risk and move my plist. The freshly created one did not fix the problem. So I wouldn't suspect the plist at this point.

In my case (and I assume everyone else's), the problem is certainly related to having an Exchange calendar: When I remove the Exchange calendar account from my Apple Calendar, the problem disappears, and, when I add the account back, the problem resumes. I'm guessing that everyone else on this discussion also has an Exchange account in their Calendar.

Removing the plist file did not help in my case either.

I have a Exchange Calendar too, but I really need that one, so deleting it would only give me a new problem.

Deleting the Exchange Calendar completely from my iMac 5K solved the problem, disabling the Exchange Calendar didn’t.

I added the Exchange Calendar again to my Mac after deleting it and the problem stayed away. This is the path forward for everyone KNOWING their Exchange login credentials, and deleting and adding back the calendar only takes minutes.

Yes this worked for me too with El Capitan 10.11.4 beta. Nothing else worked.

Your post is a bit older, but I had the same problem and tried every suggestion (plist removal, command positioning the window, etc.) as described in this thread.

Tested your theory and can now predict the behavior:

• Calendar list visible: half height opening whatever you do prior to your window position and size
• Calendar list hidden: window is opening as you would expect in its original size

I know many people tell us that Apple is not reading these forums. But they should: this is really one for their iCal backlog 🙂

For now I will switch off the Calendar list.
