I have two phones one work one personal. I have set-up each correctly and they seem to work if a start the imessage on the phone. How do ensure my contacts are using the proper imessage from my macbook pro? I see no place where I can change this.

Just make sure you're signed into iMessage using the same account on all devices.
I have two phones. on my macbook pro I have my contacts. When I choose a personal contact in the list I would like to go out the correct phone. I have one contact list. I want to know how can set-up imessage on the macbook pro to use the correct phone per contact. I have both set-up in messages
Message is going to use whatever contacts are on it's device. So setup the same contacts account on the phone that you have on the computer. Or you sync your contacts from the computer to the phone using iTunes.
Yes I have both set-up this way but I want to restrict the way imessage from mac process the message as I see sometimes it goes out to the correct phone other times it does not
