iTunes will not open in windows 8.1 Pro on Surface

After upgrading to new iTunes 12, it will not open on the MS Surface.

I have tried the following:

Troubleshoot Compatibility testing - no luck

Removed Quicktime - no luck

remove and reinstalled iTunes several times (rebooting PC after each de-install) - no luck

Run as Admin - no luck

Thoughts / Suggestions?

Presumably a Surface Pro? It shouldn't install on a Surface.

Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support first.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

Interesting that your first comment is that iTunes shouldn't install. Since I have been running iTunes on the Surface for the time I got the Surface over a year ago. The problem was only with the new release of iTunes.

I have tried the suggestions that you listed but still no success. I tried several of the older versions of iTunes going back to 10.1.

Seems that Apple does not want iTunes running on windows 8 surface systems, as seen on other sites. I just like to use iTunes for my phone. O'well there are other alternatives.

Maybe since you are a mac type, why does iTunes App download larger that a full MS Office suite?

For others needing clarification:

  • The original Surface and the Surface 2, which run Windows RT, are not supported by iTunes
  • All variants on the Surface Pro, which run Windows 8.1 or 10, should* be able to run iTunes
  • The new(ish) Surface 3, which runs Windows 10, should* be able to run iTunes

* with the caveat that like most tablets the usability of iTunes may be limited by the relatively small internal storage on some models.
