why does photos show "no photos" for my iPhone, when I have 27,000 photos on my iPhone?

I just upgraded to photos. I had major problems with iPhotos so thrilled to upgrade. When I plugged in my phone to upload the 27,000 photos I have (yes, I have a lot), I clicked on "import" and then selected my iPhone. But Photos tell me "no photos". What's the deal?

Note: under the "photos" tab, it tells me at the very bottom of the scroll page, that it's uploading 43GB of photos. but it's been uploading 43GB of photos for almost 4 days now. And *some* of my iPhone photos appear but not all. I don't get this new app. I just want to move a bunch of photos from my phone to my mac to free up space on my phone. Will someone help me?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

But I still am having the problem that I can't get my iPhone photos onto my mac.

Is iCloud Photo Library enabled on the iPhone? Then the iPhone photos will download from iCloud Photo Library so you do not need to download them separately.

If the iPhone is not syncing with iCloud, there may be several reasons for this - the iPhone may need a soft restart, dropbox my be intercepting the photos, or the iPhone does not trust your Mac.

  1. After the system upgrade you may need to confirm again the trust for your Mac: Have you already confirmed that you trust the computer on the Phone? If not, launch iTunes, unlock the iPhone, then confirm that you trust the computer on the iPhone.
  2. Are you using Dropbox? Then make sure that the Preferences in Dropbox are set in a way, that Dropbox cannot access the photos on your iPhone, when the iPhone is connected.

3. If that does not solve it, try to restart the iPhone while it is connected to USB (press the home button and the power button at the same time) , and also restart Photos.

That message is from iCloud Photo Library.

Your Photos library is obviously syncing with iCloud Photo Library.

If your iPhone is also syncing with iCloud Photo Library, it would explain why no new photos are available on the iPhone. Photos will first download the photos from iCloud.

What are your Preferences in Photos > Preferences > iCloud?

The initial sync with iCloud Photo Library can take more than a week for a library of your size.
