What does the warning triangle with exclamation mark mean next to Inbox in Mail?

I have attempted to change my mail account from POP to IMAP. Even though I carefully followed my ISP instructions, it did not work. I now have a triangular symbol with an exclamation mark, next to 'Inbox'. All my emails that were in the 'Inbox' have disappeared. Likewise all my emails that were in my 'Sent' box have disappeared. And, I am not now receiving emails in 'Mail' although new ones can be read in my web mail.

Any suggestions please?

The triangle with an exclamation point means that your settings for that inbox may be incorrect. Your computer is unable to correct to that server; thus, it can retrieve or send messages.

Hi Eric

Thanks for your reply and link. I realised that this was the case but didn't know how to resolve it. I again contacted my ISP, spoke to a different technician than previous and he detected that I had the wrong Host name in Mail Accounts> Incoming Mail Server settings. As soon as I entered the correct ones, pending messages populated my In Box etc. and are now being shown.

However the messages that disappeared from the In Box and Sent Box prior to my first attempt to change from POP to IMAP have not appeared. I have contacted Apple Support via their 'Chat' but the advice is that I will not be able to recover them. Thankfully some of my messages that I had flagged can still be read. Likewise I can read those for which I had created Mail Boxes. But I would still like to know whether anyone else has a suggestion for recovering the missing messages. It is an unfortunate coincidence that two days before I first tried to change from POP to IMAP, I had trashed messages from my web server, so I cannot recover them from there either!
