Why am I being asked to update my apple ID password ?

So lets begin ....

On my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 I have experienced this issue and happens when I turn both devices off at night and on the next morning. I keep getting two prompts when I go into the settings menu (1). Apple ID Verification - enter the password for john.deere@.... in settings, with the options of "Not Now" or "Settings". - "Not Now" just takes you into the home screen - when I click on "settings" It prompts saying "the apple ID for John.deere@....needs to be updated".

I don't want to update my apple ID password ,,so I'm curious to see why this occuring. I enter my regular apple ID password and a few seconds go by and just puts me back into the regular settings menu. I feel there is no need to update my apple ID and wondering what the **** is going on ! (both devices doing this) except my Macbook. Did some some research and even called apple.

My specs:

Macbook Air (2015) El capitain

Iphone 6 (REG) iOS 9.1

Ipad Air 2 iOS 9.1

So far this what I've done with no results :

Called Apple- They says it is/may be a bug with the software.. suggestion was complete restore of devices - did that.

Signed in and out iCloud on both devices, restart and hard boot - no luck.

Signed into iTunes , manage devices , checked to see if anything was out wack - nothing appeared evident .

Checked macbook side of things with security or anything along those lines, so far nothing.

IF ANYONE HAS THE SAME ISSUE(S) PLEASE DROP A LINE OR SUGGESTION.

THANKS

Exactly the same thing is happening to me. Both my iPhone and Mac are switched off overnight - the iPhone because I'm contactable via a landline phone, the Mac because I'm not using it.

I have a very strong password and yet each time I start-up either machine, iCloud asks me to re-input my password. The iPhone also suggests I input a verification code (where? It doesn't say) in order to log on to the 'other' machine.

I have changed the password in case someone has managed to get hold of it and is trying to login via an unidentified device, but this hasn't stopped the problem.

It's getting tedious so has anyone any ideas as to how I can sort it out?

Hum, sorry to say that FelipeV, but, unless you have a link from Apple showing that it's indeed a security protocol of iOS 9, I can't believe you.

I have the exact same problem, exactly for the same causes as tacitus99, (the iPhone because I'm contactable via a landline phone, the iPad because I'm not using it), and it was not the case with iOS 9 until iOS 9.1.

I'm updating my iPhone and iPad to iOS 9.2 right now, let's hope it will fix this issue!

I will let you know the result tomorrow!

Ok guys, I contacted apple via support chat and went through all the motions and even sent them screen shots to attempt to resolve my issues. The support specialist couldn't figure it out either. The previous support specialist from a few days back said via phone she had the same issue and may be a bug ended up restoring her phone etc... and fixed the problem. Well I tried that and didn't work for me. So last night, via chat, this support specialist had no clue or info om bugs associated with IOS 9.1. So with great dissapointment after all these years having the same password I went and changed it........It fixed the issue. I still want to know why ? and so others can have the info ...new security ? what the **** !!!! * Note: make sure you go through Itunes to check your devices and make sure all have the new password.

So as of last night no issues to report but still ***** I had to change my password !

HI FelipeV!

I'm really happy to report that, as I was hoping, this issue is gone since updating to iOS 9.2!

We can again switch off our iOS devices and switch them on again in the morning without having to enter our password! What a relieve!

Sorry Sberard1, if you had waited a few hours more you wouldn't have needed to change your password!

Anyway, you can put this post as resolved!

Cheers,

PIerre

Thanks for all the comments - it's good to know that I'm not alone in experiencing this problem. I've upgraded to iOS 9.2 and so far at least the problem has gone. I'm still on Mavericks on the desktop but with the arrival of El Cap 11.2 I shall be upgrading over the XMas holiday, something I suspect is going to bring another load of grief. However, I am wondering whether the problem has its roots in the fact that I have two Apple IDs: a single name which was originally used for iTunes since the early iPods and subsequently the App store, and my iCloud one for which I use an XX@me.com email address which I set up back when Mobile Me first hit the shelves. There's also the possibility that addresses ending in me.com are deprecated and I should be using XX@icloud.com

All App store/iTunes purchases have been made with the original 'single name' whereas iCloud sync has been done using the Mobile Me email address. Since Apple will not allow the merger of the two IDs there's probably not a lot I can do about it unless I junk one account, probably the me.com, since purchases were done through the other one. This will bring its own set of problems since I've used the XX@me.com address quite widely believing it unlikely to be changed. Ideally I would merge the accounts using the XX@me.com for the 'single name' account

A workaround might be to set up family sharing using the two IDs both of which happen to be myself, but I could see that leading to an even bigger mess if a machine registered in one name, attempts to sync to calendars etc registered under another name. Also if the iPhone is backed up to a machine registered under a different ID

Please Apple find some way of resolving this mess by allowing mergers, since I doubt I'm the only one in this situation. Whatever happened to, 'it just works"......
