The usual way to do go to "normal mode" is to do a Reset (does not erase iPod)

If doing a Reset takes you back to diagnostics mode, my guess is that moisture in the iPod is shorting out the button controls. Since pressing and holding down the buttons during iPod startup is what puts the iPod into that mode, it thinks you are holding down those buttons. I suggest you leave the iPod in a warm dry place for a few days (at least). Hopefully, after the moisture evaporates over time, it will function properly.

Well after asking Apple and the local Apple dealer and searching Ebay, Amazon, and Craig's list for used Nano like I have

the best deal is with Apple

I send my damaged nano to them and they will send me a brand new iPod nano (at least that is what I was told, may be refurbished)

All for the total (including tax) for 87.97


by the way New ones on Ebay and Amazon where priced at $219 to 239

Really like the nano design and MUCH less expensive than an iWatch
