The usual way to do go to "normal mode" is to do a Reset (does not erase iPod)

If doing a Reset takes you back to diagnostics mode, my guess is that moisture in the iPod is shorting out the button controls. Since pressing and holding down the buttons during iPod startup is what puts the iPod into that mode, it thinks you are holding down those buttons. I suggest you leave the iPod in a warm dry place for a few days (at least). Hopefully, after the moisture evaporates over time, it will function properly.

So, I docked the nano to my iMac . The iMac completely recognizes the nano but the nano screen
has a flashing forbidden logo and "do not disconnect"
reset the nano , twice and still no change
any Ideas?
If your iPod nano is set to Manually manage music (or Enable disk use), isn't that ("Do not disconnect" screen) what should be on the screen when it is connected? Are you saying that you still get diagnosics mode when the iPod starts up disconnected?
Well after asking Apple and the local Apple dealer and searching Ebay, Amazon, and Craig's list for used Nano like I have
the best deal is with Apple
I send my damaged nano to them and they will send me a brand new iPod nano (at least that is what I was told, may be refurbished)
All for the total (including tax) for 87.97
by the way New ones on Ebay and Amazon where priced at $219 to 239

A brand new nano would the 7th gen design (not the 6th gen design like your nano), which has better features. Retail price is $149, so what you paid is a good deal.

An unopened 6th gen iPod nano package would be somewhat rare, which is why the cost is so high on eBay and Amazon.
No I like the square design and the nike app can wear as watch or in my pocket
I'm just saying, if they are sending a brand new iPod nano, you'll probably get a 7th gen.
Well it has been awhile since we last spoke
apple and I did not make a connection for returning the nano
after we did it took about a week
And now I have what they tell me is a new iPod nano 16 gig 6th generation, just like the one I laundered
