iTunes 12.3.1.23 video playback not working

I recently updates to OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 and iTunes 12.3.1.23 on my MacBook. My iTunes will now play songs, but video playback for TV shows/movies I've purchased through the iTunes store is not working. The video player remains black, and there is no sound. The files have been downloaded to my MacBook, and are not playing through iCloud. Thoughts or suggestions?

I've tried closing iTunes and restarting the computer.

I have also tried changing my video playback preference to 720p from 1080p, as was suggested in another thread.

I included this in the OP for this discussion stream. I am not willing at this point to do anything that will require that I reload any content. I use this computer to teach, and I don't have time at this point in the semester, and can't risk losing any materials/marking that I am working on. I don't believe I should have to spend hours fixing a problem accessing material that I PURCHASED, and that worked fine until I did this update. I was/am hoping for a solution that will be an easier fix.
