Computer crashes on Safari launching

Hi there

My computer crashes when Safari or Software Update launch. The screen turns darker and a grave message in 4 languages asks to restart the computer by holding down the on button for few seconds.

Firefox, iTunes and Quick Time all 3 work fine when connected to the internet.

I've followed some steps I've found on similar issues in this forum like Repair Disk Permissions, delete Safari Preferences List, delete Safari Bookmarks List, reinstalled the Security Update 2006-06 but still the same.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Welcome To  Discussions Pimms7up!

You are experiencing a Kernel Panic

You will find advice here Resolving Kernel Panics.

Also, you may want to check for Font Conflicts.
Here is an article that will assist you with that Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, authored by Kurt Lang.

Is the RAM original or added?
Have there been an unusual occurrences before this started to happen, like crashes, freezes, etc?
Have you made any changes to the system, before the problem arose? Like upgrading the OS, installing or updating any applications or programs?
Have you added any peripherals?

Please post as much information as possible.

iBod,

The log is posted in Pimms7up's other topic Powerbook keeps crashing upon Safari & Software Update.

Hey iBod! thank you very much for your help

Every time I verified disk Permissions the options Verify Disk and Repair Disk remain dimm. How do I get there then?

Here there's a copy of the panic.log

Thank you

Pimms7up,

"Every time I verified disk Permissions the options Verify Disk and Repair Disk remain dimm. How do I get there then?"

You have to startup from the system disk, to run Disk Repair.

THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD

1.Insert the Panther Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

Hey Ali B!

Thank you very much...I've been reading the links you paste and sounds like the issue might be there. However I haven't got to read all of them yet and I'm looking forward to reading them tonight after work.

Info:

the ram was already added when I bought this second hand pismo as well as the OSX Panther.

I myself downloaded every security update ever since.

Freezes & crashes on Safari happened before though never to the point to crash PB and they have not been so many, occuring rarely.

Never got crash on Software Update before.

I downloaded Messenger for Mac months ago which version 5 work fine. I updated to version 6 not long ago.

And.. my lovely gf downloaded flip4mac and WMP, have to say I wasn't very happy with that windows software on our beloved PB but at least all .ASF video files of our cheap digital camera could be watchable.

The day before problem started she confessed she downloaded a plugin for WMP from a site she was surfing to watch her dutch comedy...

Then I tried I Explorer to get connected to internet which worked but veeery slow and mannaged to download Firefox which keeps me going and works fine.

I got rid of every "windows" soft on my PB.

Thought problem had to do with Safari, so when clicked on Software Update got to the very dissapointing crash on this application as well.

The only peripheral I added is a generic 3 buttons mouse with scroll and that was about a year ago.

I guess this is nearly it.

Thank you again for your help and consideration.

Hope it is alright since I don't have the OSX disc to repair it. The PB came with Panther already installed and working but no disc just the OS 9 disc.

I forgot to mention other software I installed... Skype, DivX and the latest version of Flash Player.

Skype & DivX are no longer installed.
Flash Player is still there.

I've just just got another crash (brand new) when I click on Mac Help in the Finder menu. I better go reading about Kernel stuff. C u later, Ali B. Cheers!

Hi,

You should get hold of the Panther installation disk. As well as being needed for verifying the boot disk, it's also needed for resetting your admin password (should the need crop up).

Technically your setup is not legal - whoever sold you the Mac should have either supplied the Panther disk or removed Panther before selling it.

Hello Again Pimms7up!

One option is to purchase the disks online.

I don't know if you need a special European version, or can order online from US vendors, but, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.

Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store (US), as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.

Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.

If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update, to upgrade to the most current version.

Additionally,

"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

Hi Ali B & iBod!

Thank you very much again for all info and support!

When I'm legal with the osx I will pop in again and probably ask for more support. I'm quite sure that I will go for Panther since I heard it is best for this oldish fancy lady I'm living with.

Very best wishes and thanks again, you 2 have been most helpful!

Cheers!
