Alternative for iDVD on iMac El Capitan 10.11.1

Hi there,

Is there an alternative for iDVD.

I have a brand new iMac with El Capitan 10.11.1

I see offerings from Wondershare and iSkysoft. Do they work properly ? Any experience with any of them ? Which one works best ?

Thanks in advance,

Appelbum

Am I right in saying that I have to erase my HD to do this?

No. If you have enough room you should be able to partition the boot drive into to partitions. I have 150 GB reserved for my Mavericks partition with about 73 GB free. I only have 75 GB used with my system and apps. All you need is about 50 GB of free space so whatever the system will take up plus the apps should be sufficient.

Thanks again OT.

... but I have even more questions ... SORRY! I think this idea is an excellent idea and really want to understand your workflow fully.

  • Am i right in saying I will also have to have a copy of iTunes & iPhoto on this partition (as well as iDVD & iMovie) for iDVD or iMovie to be able to utilise them, (requiring more space}, or do you load the images and music you require for each specific project onto a USB and load them into this partition as and when you need them?
  • Also will time machine back up both partitions or will I have to organise something else to back up this new partition?
  • Lastly ... I hope ... would you recommend Mavericks or Mountain Lion for this partition as have access to both?

Thanks again in advance .

Yes. You would have to have versions that are compatible with the system that is on the partition. Usually iPhoto would be the only app that would not work on both systems and you would have to have two libraries, one on each partition. iTunes

Also will time machine back up both partitions

Time Machine will backup both partitions.

My partition is Mavericks. It's been so long since I've used Mt. Lion I can't say if one would be better than the other. it's what you're more comfortable with.

Thanks again for your expert knowledge

So just to confirm ... on the new partition I need to install Mavericks, iDVD, iMovie, iTunes and iPhoto?

Would you know what versions of iTunes & iPhoto I need to download to be compatible or will the correct version just download for me when I log into the App Store?

Also, do you store your projects on this partition or on the main partition with everything else?

Thanks again ...

ould you know what versions of iTunes & iPhoto I need to download to be compatible

While booted into your Mavericks partition go to the App Store and download the iTunes version that is available. As for iPhoto the latest version that will run on it is 9.4.3. You will need to have some version of iPhoto 9.x already on your Mavericks partition in order to get to update to 9.4.3 via these updates.

1 - update to iPhoto 9.2.1

2 - update to iPhoto 9.3

3 - update to iPhoto 9.3.2

4 - update to iPhoto 9.4

5 - and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3

You can keep your projects wherever you'd like It makes no difference.

Hi Old Toad

I think I'm being stupid regarding my new partition for iDVD & iMovie etc. and am in need a little help.

I've created my new partition (150Gb), re-named it and then dragged Mavericks, iDVD & iMovie into it.

I then re-started while holing down the alt / option key down however the new HD partition didnt show up. All I got showing was HD, Time Machine and a third HD which I think was the rescue or safe boot option. I didn't see the the new partition which I have given a specific titlle to.

I thought I had to boot form the new HD partition and then load Mavericks onto it, do I have to run the Mavericks App first on this new partition before I can boot form it?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm being a pain with all these questions.

Old Toad I managed to find my old install DVD (Snow Leopard) boot from that and install it onto my new partition.

I now have two working partitions with different OS on them! Woo Hoo!

Just working my way through all of the updates now. I also have to decide whether to update to Mountain Lion and leave it there or update all the way to Mavericks.

I stayed on ML for ages and have fond memories of it. In fact I only updated to Mavericks so I could move on to Yosemite. I've had lots of issues since then though so I'm not sure what to do at the moment.

I also didn't realise that I have access to files on each OS at the same time which is an added bonus. I thought I was going to have to do lots of USB transfers from one OS to the other.

Thanks again or all your help in this.

Hi, Glad to see that someone has the same problem I do. Based in South Africa, we shoot about 120 wedding videos per year with low pricing, that is why automated processes are important to me i.t.o the volumes we do. iDVD was perfect as it took me less than 5 min to import my 200gb FCPx .mov file, do the menus, and let it run through the compression and cut the first of 4 dual layer dvd's overnight. A week ago the programme stopped working and calls for password to continue the atos debugging process to continue, which crashes the programme - apparently has something to do with feeding info back to the developers.

Does anyone know of a way around this ?

The other option is to offer the videos on a USB flash drive, but this has a cost implication.
