Side-scroll affects wrong "shelf" in iTunes Store

Hi I have three 2015 Retina iMacs in our house. And all of them experience this issue, so I assume it can be recreated by others.

Hovering over a new iTunes Store "shelf" (side-scrollable window) - in any of the the last several versions of iTunes (currently 12.3.1.23) - the scroll input initially does not respond. Attempts to side-scroll seem momentarily dead. (Using Magic Mouse)

And then after a couple- dead- attempts to scroll, iTunes suddenly wakes up and starts responding and all seems fine. But then when you move your cursor over the next "shelf", that shelf doesn't respond. At least that's what I thought - BUT...

Then I realized that iTunes WAS side-scrolling the second time I tried - but it wasn't affecting the shelf I was hovered over, it was rather affecting the previously scrolled shelf! Even if you already scrolled that shelf off the screen vertically. Meaning - that even though the cursor is clearly hovering over shelf 2, shelf 1 is still the one responding to side-scroll input.

Continuing to swipe the mouse and change direction, iTunes once again suddenly wakes up and switches the target shelf and starts scrolling correctly.

But this poor behavior just seems very un-Apple, and I can't quite wrap my head around whether there is something I'M doing that's causing it or what.

This inconsistent effect can be recreated ad nauseam simply by choosing new shelves to scroll. Vertical scroll works fine. It doesn't require a new page to load. I find the effect more pronounced in movies and tv show sections in the iTunes store.

This does not happen in any other app. Just iTunes. No discernible bluetooth issues appear to be present. All batteries in Magic Mice (mice? mouses? meese?) are new.

Any idea whether this is user-fixable, or is this just another weirdness with El Cap?

Thanks!

I'm on El Capitan again and just updated to 10.11.5 and iTunes 12.4. And the problem still persists. It's definitely a bug in the OS as the problem goes away when I downgrade OS X to 10.9.5.

FWIW, it is not a bug in the OS, as before, I have no problems scrolling with either the wired Apple Mouse or the wireless Magic Mouse on three different models of Macs. I don't have a Magic Mouse 2 to check. It could be a very specific hardware problem only affecting certain models but I think it's more likely it is some software that is installed.

FWIW, you can't really assume that. It could be the combination of 10.9.5 with "x" software is fine but the combination of "x" software + 10.11.* is not. Or it could be "y" software + "x" software + 10.11.*. There are a multitude of combinations. That's why it's so hard to find the issue sometimes.

I downloaded the updated El Capitan OS X installer (version 10.11.5) from the App store and created a USB flash drive using Apple's procedure.

I started the OS X installer and first erased (i.e. reformatted) my HFS+ partition, then did a clean install. Next I downloaded the iTunes 12.4 for Mac installer from itunes.apple.com and use it to update iTunes.

Upon opening iTunes and logging in to the iTunes store, the problem is immediately there when I use my Magic Mouse (the old model which I got with my old iMac, late 2009). Same problem is there when I use the trackpad on my MBP.

I will now downgrade my MBP back to 10.9.5. (I don't have anything of value on my MBP. All my files reside on a NAS box.)

It's not that. I can cause this effect on (it appears) any Mac running El Cap. Laptop or desktop. I have tried this countless times on work computers and friends/family computers. It's a thing. I am convinced, anyone for whom this does not happen, simply does not happen to exhibit the inciting gestural behavior.

If it's hardware related it's probably got something to do with Magic Mouse (I've tried both 1 and 2).

And note that I'm not the OP of this thread. Other people have the same problem.

Yes, I'm aware. The problem is I have three different models of Macs and none of mine have the issue. It could be a firmware issue as well. You're right though one would think it would affect scrolling in any program, not just iTunes.

edit: I don't have a MBP however. an iMac, MBA and a 2015 retina MB.

FWIW, Joel, so far three users have reported this problem out of millions of Mac users. It's not a "thing".

I have the same problem and it is terrible because you not enjoying browsing movies.

And I want to clarify how to reproduce: shelf switched not by mouse move but by vertical scroll. If you do slow it can happen on third for example shelf, not second.

So steps looks like:

1) Open iTunes Store Movies

2) Place mouse pointer in New Releases (and don't move more)

3) Horizontal scroll to see movies in current shelf

4) Vertical scroll to change next shelf

5) Horizontal scroll to see movies in current shelf

6) Reproduce 4) and 5) until you realize that horizontal scroll works not for current shelf but for preview or even for prevpreview

After scroll froze on some "bad" shelf even after you select other shelfs the horizontal scroll works only for "bad" shelf.

For me it appears quite quick on second or third shelf, even if all seems right at 4th or 5th it breaks.

And for me it looks like:

"Hm, Ok, whats new, lets see next, lets se what recommend" you try to see next page of current (and active) shelf but upper (preview) shelf is moving and you so "FUUUUUUUUUUU"
