Download full resolution images from OS X mail - how do I do this?

My friend sent me 6 large resolution photos from his iCloud account to my iCloud account. All I see on my end is six small photos. In the mail preview pane to the left it states "Download full resolution images Available until Jan 10, 2016". My question is "how do I download the full resolution photos"?

Hello all, I found an easy way to download the full resolution images. Your Mac Mail or iOS Mail is creating a zip file for the full resolution images and store this zip file on the iCloud Server. You can access the zip file url if you look in the source of the message that should have contain the link to download the full resolution images. To see the source, you need to follow these steps: While on the selected message, click on View in the menu bar, then click on Message and then on Raw Source, or you can press Option + Command + U, this will open a new window with the raw content of the selected message. Then search for Image-Archive-Url, next to it you will see a url that begin with a http, copy this link in safari and the download will start, I just did it and it's working like any other link. Keep in mind to copy all the url with all the attributes in the url. Thanks all for your help.

zinacef, thank you for you reply. (I think you meant 5 GB not 5 MB above)

Here is what I found out. On my iPad or iPhone I get the words "Download full resolution photos..." and a little cloud icon that I can press to download the full resolution photos in the email (sent to my iCloud account) On my Macbook Air or iMac there are no words and no cloud icon to download the full resolution photos. I just get 6 thumbnail sized photos. If I try to save them to my Macbook Air they are still very small in size.

Here is a screen shot from my mail on my iMac.

I still can't figure out how to download them. I have tried saving them to the local hard drive and Photos App but they are still small in size as noted by the 166KB for all 6 photos.

I am having this same problem. In the preview pane of Mail, it says "Download full resolution images Available until..." But when I open the email on my Macbook Air, there is no link to download the full resolution images and all I see are the thumbnails (I tried simply downloading the thumbnails in the hopes that they were merely links to full resolution images, but they were tiny).

Where should I expect to see the download button?

I used two of my IMAP-based email accounts as a test and ended up with a positive result in Mail running under MacOS 10.11.5. In the email account that I used to receive a 49MB file, I went to Mail >Preferences > Accounts and selected the account I wanted to use as the receiving account. Once that selection was made, I clicked the Advanced button on the right hand side of the window and, then, unchecked Automatically download all attachments. I closed the Preferences window and saved the changes. I then used another IMAP account to send the account I had just altered the 49MB file. When I opened the the message in the receiving account, it briefly appeared in the small format and, then, in a few seconds, it appeared in its larger 49MB size. When I checked its download size from the dropdown, it was, indeed, 49MB. I ran this test three times with three different images and it worked in each case. Granted this is a workaround and the bug needs to be resolved, but at least it works!
